Darkening the color of a rosewood fretboard

I've searched the forums and read up a little on it, but I still can't find any certain solution. The best bet seems to be lemon oil, but again it seems from what I've read that may cause some damage. So tell me, what IS the best, most effective way to darken the color of your rosewood fretboard safely?
