DiMarzio Advice

Hello,

I know these thread are everywhere, so sorry to add another; but this will be my first set of DiMarzio's, so I'd like to get what I'm after first time out it I can.

First off, the guitar they will be going in is your run of the mill standard basswood body RG, but it will be a H-H pick-up configuration, and probably coil-tapped.

What I'm looking for in the pick-ups are that they can clean up well, but still have a decent output when the volume is kicked up. Also I'd like them to respond to how you play, for example they respond to your pick attack; they are the main things I'm after, but I don't want a insanely high gain pick-up like the X2N for example. Also, when I'll be using overdrive, it will be more vintage orientated ( ala Satriani's sound ) instead of a higher gain sound, of maybe Mr. Vai.

I've been on DiMarzio's website, and found the Air Norton being a big choice for many people in the neck position; coupled with the Tone Zone they seem to be a popular combo. I noticed they mention the Evo2 cleaning up well when the volume is turned down, but I don't think it would balance well with the Air Norton in the neck position, would it?

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Sabre

How about Evo2 and PafPro
or ToneZone and PafPro

The Evo2 and the Air Norton would fit match ok. Alternatively you can also try:

Breed Bridge + Paf Joe
evo 2 + Paf joe
Air Zone + Paf Pro

If you don't get enough answers here you can also goto dimarzioforum.com and try there as well.

Thanks guys!

Anyone with experience of the Evo2 know if your picking effects its response?

Re: DiMarzio Advice

I have just decided on a EVO for the bridge and a Pro in the neck, in my basswood body. EVO might be a bit hot for your taste though, maybe a Tone Zone and PAF Pro, Fred and PAF JOE or PAF Pro and PAF Joe?
I have read up on these (alot of time on night shifts...) and DiMarzio seem to "match them". Have you used the pick up picker on their website?

Consider the Norton for the bridge position as well. Squeels well, plenty harmonics, full sounding. Since it's a medium output pickup it also cleans up real well.

Ok, I've installed it and I'm really impressed with it, the Evo2 is so balance that I love it, compared to the evolution pickup it's not so in your face and IMO it's tighter than the evolution pickup, it's a more moderns sounding when compared to my tone zone which is very vintage sounding.
