DIY holefilling and repaint

im toying with repainting my ibanez hardtail 7 string rg

i suffer PGS (paul gilbert syndrome)

iv spent years playing pgms, and have adapted to not having a knob anywhere near the bridge, so when i bought this 7, i had the tone knob ripped out and the volume knob put where the tone knob was... i now have a small hole where the volume knob used to be...

how would a pro go about filling this hole?

then how do i go about repainting it? theres so much on this site, i cant work out if i need to strip the lacquer or if i can paint over it (i read that somewhere on here) or do i need to strip that then paint and refinish...

i want chameleon paint , anyone know how to go about doing it? where can i buy it? what colours does it come in? i like the mystic dream finish, but not green/purple

Re: DIY holefilling and repaint

Way too involved for the forum. Start by googleing GUITAR REFINISHING. Ibanez does not use lacquer but uses a polyurethane finish that is tough as nails. Fill holes with dowel and epoxy, then sand flush. You probably can paint over the old paint if you prep it well but remember that the added thickness of new paint will likely mean that recessed parts will not fit well so use a dremel to sand off the paint in the neck screw pockets(AANJ only) and the sides where any plastic covers go(trem, control cavity, etc). Tape off the neck pocket bottom and avoid laying lots of paint onto the sides of the pocket unless the neck has some play.

I dont mean to be rude when I say this but if you have to ask all those question it would probably be better that you got someone to do it for you.

otherwise check out projectguitar.com

chomaflair (chameleon) paint is readily available in the UK, just google it, it reasonably expensive though so make sure you get it right or like I said, get a pro to do it.

I cannot recall what the part name/number is, but someone had mentioned dong the same modification to their guitar at one time, and they utilized some form of plastic/rubber plug to fill the hole.

Have you thought about glueing a lucky penny or something over the whole?
