Do I need to change the springs on my Edge

Hi all,

I'm fixing up an old RG550 (1988 I think, in RFR with matching headstock).

When I pull back on the trem, the action (of the trem) seems a little stiff. I appreciate that the setup may need some work, but I think I've got it real close to how it should be.

When I get the trem angle set right (very slightly above neutral) the claw is only about 3-4mm from the edge of the trem cavity. Is this normal? Are my springs too tired?

Thanks
Neil

BTW, I should have added that I'm using 9-46 strings. Maybe I should try 9-42's, what do you reckon?

Re: Do I need to change the springs on my Edge

The guy that had my guitar before me had 10 - 46 and they were too heavy for the springs to take, I think he might have thought it was broken lol dumbass.

try 9 - 42, thats what they're made for or you could try using 2 of the heavy springs or 2 light springs and a heavy in the middle, thats what i did with the 10 - 46 and it worked fine. It was just a bit stiff.

That sounds like the knife edges aren't in the V of the posts properly.

it can't hurt to change the springs either...when i got my '91 Jem, changing the springs helped a lot - they were badly in need.

See the Jemsite tech section on stretching springs a little more quickly.

Thanks for your help guys. I will try lighter strings, and maybe get some new springs from Rich when I have worked out what other parts are needed.

Springs are super easy to replace, and you don't necessarily have to wait to order them from rich. All three together will be less than $15 and any halfway decent music store will have them (as long as they have some kind of tech shop)

Just remember that you're going to probably going to need a setup after you replace. The claw screws will have to be loosened considerably and that will throw some other stuff out of whack.

Cool

You could also try putting some oil on the springs that usually makes them soter and smoother when dive bombing or doing pull ups
