Does Respraying make your guitar not as good as before? - Fi

Hi,

I want to get an Ibanez Sabre like Jim Davies from pitchshifter (All Black Guitar) but ibanez don't do a black one with two humbuckers (So the Web Site Says). If I get one I would like to get it resprayed black by a proffesional (I would mess it up if I did it!). My friends say that it isn't the same if you get it resprayed as you have to sand the body and everything ?

What are people's experiences and views about respraying?

Also can you fit EMG 81 and 85 humbuckers into a sabre as the body is thin so I thought that the battery would not go anywhere????? (Can it??).

Thanks Everyone!

-Anyone know any good companies in the uk for respraying??

If it's done properly, a refinish will be just as good as it was from the factory. I refinished my yahama myself and it is just like a factory finish. Mind you, I spent a lot of time prepping the body and filling any nick that happened to be in it.
Hope this helps, bro

James Murphy (ex-Testament, Shrapnel Solo Recording Artist) uses Sabres with EMGs. *So it must be possible. *

That is a two sided issue....Getting a moron to re-paint your guitar can result in a horrible looking paint job, I've witnessed this many times during my years as a guitar salesman.

On the other hand, If you get a competent person to do this, the paint job can be excellent.

As for the guitar "not being the same" who cares...as long as you like it, that is all that matters.

My advice and personal opinion is think twice, and then again, before making any critical decisions like re-painting. Make sure that the person who is going to paint your axe has a good reputation. What are you going to do with a crappy painted guitar when the time comes (if it does) that you want to sell it? You'll be stuck with it!

Good luck!

Get some experienced to respray, and yes, EMG's in a sabre is possible, because I have it! Just make sure you isolate the battery by putting tape around it, so it doesn't short any electronics, and if you can get an 89 instead of an 85, as the 89 is basically an 85, but with the possibility of splitting it so you get a nice single coil sound out of it = more options = always good.

The battery is a very tight fit though....

I've repainted my ibanez RG270 myself directly over the original finsih, with carpaint.
After a while i took it to a store for a setup & one guy came up & sayed "OH NO U KILLED IT, ALL U CAN HEAR NOW IS THE SOUND OF THE PU's"
well i don't agree with him, the guitar sounds really nice unplugged, not talking about plugged :), now painting directly over the original paint may affect the sound, but it won;t probably ruin it

My UV777PBK has a pretty silver Vai signature on the front that I wanted to save, so I had 3 coats of polly sprayed over the front. The tone DID change slightly. IMO, it changed for the better and became richer sounding in the low-mids.

I think the thicker the layers of paint are, the fewer wood properties you will hear in the tone. I am not sure that is all bad. Mine sounds great… even unplugged.

Bob,

Maybe your PBK sounds better because of the signature.

I don't see how a paint job would change the sound very much. It MIGHT change the sound of it unplugged, but who the hell plays their guitar unplugged all the time. I repainted my AX7 over the original finish with carpaint and it sounded great before and after.
