don't want to pay for a tech setup!

My RG2550E is in D tuning, with some heavy strings on it. I want it back to standard tuning with my regular strings....I don't want to shell out the bucks again at the tech shop (plus, they never stretch the strings properly), and I'm confident I can do it myself...just some spring adjustments really.

But I'm wondering if the intonation will get screwed up from changing the spring tension. I doubt they tinkered with the action to set it up, but does anybody know if the intonation will be out if I go back to the original tuning?

Thanks!

Periodically setting the intonation is just part of owning a guitar

If it goes out, set it. It can take a little time and patience, but it's not real difficult.

Yep, good time for a learning experience. Or, if you are buddies with the tech, watch him do your next setup and get him to explain it to you so you can do them yourself afterwards. That's how I learned, we had a great tech where I grew up and I got him to show me how to do it. Actually, now there is pretty much all you need to know on the 'net, but a little old school personal mentoring is still nice.

There's a good chance you will need some neck adjustment as well. It's easy enough to do. Just check out Rich's site and take your time.

Re: don't want to pay for a tech setup!

...I tried asking the tech if I could throw in some extra bucks for him to show me and he didn't seem to cool on the idea.

Intonation on a semi fixed bridge is easy, I've done it...but the Edge Pro I'm not sure of. And I've never adjusted a truss rod....but there's lots of info on the web and I have some books.

We'll see how it goes! I just don't wanna mess up the guitar.

I'm just going through the RG owner manual, and it says after I unlock the nut, I have to unlock the saddle lock screws....then move the saddle, RELOCK, and THEN test the intonation again...seems like a lengthy process.

Can't you just leave the saddle screw loose till you get the intonation right, then tighten it? Not a huge difference in time, but is it really neccessary?

Intonating an Edge Pro is a royal pain in the a$$, but still better than dealing with a jerk of a tech.

It is necessary to tighten the saddle nut some when bringing the string back up to pitch otherwise it'll move. You can lock it down fully (careful not to strip it) when it's in the right spot. It's all trial and error, and it may take several tries to get there.

Oh yeah, make sure your trem angle stays neutral when doing this.

....about the trem angle, as long as I don't touch it from the beginning of the progress till the end of intonation, I should be ok, right?

Unfortunately, every time I slightly detune a string to get 'play' in the string, over 6 strings that may cause a slight change in angle. Oh well, I'll give it a whirl.

Yeah. If you bring the string back up to pitch each time when you check the intonation, you should be fine.

The reason I mention this is because the first time I tried to do mine, I didn't tune all the way back up before testing the intonation therefore the angle was off. I ended up having to do it all over again. Oh well, you live and learn. Good Luck.
