DR Strings?

What are your thoughts on DR Strings? I just bought a set from the Bay, they are Hi-Beams, 9-42. I wonder if I should have got Tite-Fit instead? I do like my strings to be nice and bright. Any positives or negatives, in your opinion?

I have been using D'Addario XL120's for about 20 years now, but after some disappointing sets which went black in a matter of hours I thought it was time to try another brand.

Re: DR Strings?

Hi,
I use the coated strings - black beaties on my prs cu24 and blue pea**** on my vsbl jem.I think they sound great and seem to last for ages.
Yours will be brighter without the coating and should sound pretty good.

My PRS gets played almost everyday and my sweat tends to ruin strings pretty quickly. I'm just about to change the strings after 3 months only because I'm installing a new peizo bridge.

I used to get the 3 or 5 packs of d'addarios but it's cheaper and possibly a better sound for me to use the DR's

Re: DR Strings?

I love the DR Extras, but I'm relatively inexperienced and haven't experimented with lots of different strings yet. I have also bought colored DR strings (hot pink and red) but don't like them so much. The coating flakes off and there not slick for sliding like the Extras. I like a real smooth slide. They do look cool though.

Re: DR Strings?

I've been using dr tight fits and hi beams for 8yrs.They last pretty long and sound a little fuller to my ear. They hold tune extremely well.D addario sounded a little on the tinny side compared to dr's.I tried every type of string I could get my hands on and settled on the dr's.They only require a little stretching before being locked down. Its common for me to play 4 shows,2 rehearsals and 2 recording sessions before changing a set,but sometimes I've gone more. Its also common to play a show,go to a recording session the next day and the guitar is still in perfect tune.I had a set on a guitar for over a yr. once.In a pinch,I had to use it for a session. It still held tune during whammy use even though they were a little corroded. In fairness,I did get a bad set once. The low A was defective and would not intonate,it wasn't wound evenly.Maybe I've just had good luck. But I won't use any other brand.

Re: DR Strings?

Hate 'em.

I use Ernie Ball Super Slinkys PINK 009's.

That's all I will ever use. They last longer, they bend better, they are more uniform in construction, and they are less expensive.

Re: DR Strings?

Thanks for the replies, everyone.

jemaholic, I don't like EB's! They seem to go dead way too quick. A lot of people say they rust pretty quickly too, and this is something I really don't need right now. I'm trying out the DR's because I got 2 or 3 bad sets of D'Addario's in a row. On my RG 20th I'm getting dark stains on the frets, and I need to rule out the possibility that it is anything other than the strings causing it, so I chose DR's. I read up as much as I could find and no one said they had any black junk coming off them. Some people said the Tite-Fit sound quite dull, though, so I thought I'd try the Hi-Beam instead, even though Tite's are the best selling DR's.

Re: DR Strings?

Used to use EBs, but have been using D'Addrios for a few years now. Weird you having that problem with those sets, I've never experienced that. I've had an odd string or two that I had to replace straight away because of the crappy sound they were making, but never because they went black.

Re: DR Strings?

It's the first time I've seen it in 20 years. Oh LOL, that's what the ex-fat guy who went on a diet said about his wang, come to think of it.

Seriously though, I have never had this happen with D'Addario's, and I'm still praying it's the strings and not the frets.

Re: DR Strings?

I use the Tite-Fit 7's exclusively and have no problems with them.

Re: DR Strings?

Sorry if I wasn't clear -- I meant in 20 years of using D'Addario I haven't had a bad set, these last two have been terrible man!

Re: DR Strings?

Dee, this would would be an optimal time to set it up with a set of the Zachary 9's.

Re: DR Strings?

You should try a set of those coated strings, and then if they still get black right away you will know for sure it's not the strings. It's probably just something you have been drinking in your tea.

Re: DR Strings?

I dig the ZOG's, but getting them when I need them isn't so easy, Dino. I used to put together sets from single D'Addario's for a while too, but I can't get them as cheap as I used to, so that works out more expensive. Out of convenience and cost I had to switch back to regular 9-42's, but if / when I get enough cash to order a load of the Zach strings I'll do it.

EDIT: yeah man, I thought about the coated strings but I was kinda put off by what people were saying about them. Also I am not very rich and those coated strings cost a lot.
