The only way to intonate an edge without the tool is to constantly detune, readjust the saddle, and retune. Then check how close you are and readjust if needed. There's no way anyone could intonate an edge with the strings at tension with a needle nose, at least not accurately anyway.

Re: Edge Intonation Tool
that's not the only way to intonate an edge...
do it like Rich.. have a little clamp ready and (with cloth wrapped over the clamp or something to stop damage) divebomb the whammy, clamp against body, adjust intonation, release trem and test.
i don't see how the pliers would work albee? do you mean to simply force it? i'd avoid doing that as it'll likely damage the metal, especially if you have any finish other than chrome..

Forgot about that oops
I guess I never had all the stuff to do it that way so I just forgot. Either way I can't imagine how needle nose pliers in any case would help getting it done. Glad I have the tool, gets rid of any hassle

Re: Edge Intonation Tool
Waylay, I'm pretty sure Rich has the tool for sale, it's not that expensive either. If he doesn't have it in stock, you can always call Ibanez directly and order it.

I'm not sure whether Rich still has those in stock -- check with him. You can't get them from Ibanez though -- they stopped making them a long time ago.

Re: Edge Intonation Tool
i used a clamp(as per ibanezrules) and needle nose pliers on mine. worked perfectly without damaging anything. Frustrating at first cause the inton was guess work and several strings took a few adjustments but its perfect now.
Only thing this i dunno how im gonna force the saddles out with a lo-pro so i mite need a tool for that? Any suggestions... any1 intonated a lopro without the lopro adjust?

Re: Edge Intonation Tool
if u have an example guitar that is already intonated correctly or have a pic of 1 (ie. ibanezrules) u could even intonate it without the strings attatched. This cancels the tension from the strings and therefore requires minimal force.
Obviously all guitars and necks are different so it mite need to be adjusted but its close enough to only need a few small adjustments.
thats my 2cents worth anyway
Cheers
Themi

I wouldn't force anything with these trems, the screws are pretty soft, and you definately don't want to break a saddle. If you're going to intonate without the tool, do it one of the two ways mentioned above. But you should definately have the saddle screws loosened enough to where you should be able to move the saddle with your hand, otherwise you could risk damage if you force it back or forth with a pliers (like scratching the trem or worse).

Re: Edge Intonation Tool
hrmmm good point... i didnt think of unscrewing the saddle screws. haha.. thats what happens when i get impatient and adventurous. Ahh well no harm was done n my guitar is perfectly intonated.
Next time ill try unscrewing the saddle screws. thanks for the tip.
If you think about it tho... isnt the tool forcing them without unscrewing the saddle screws?

No actually, the tool is meant to hold the saddle in the same spot as you loosen the screw. Then you can intonate while the guitar is in tune and plugged into a tuner (all while the saddle is technically "loose", yet still held in the same spot by the tool), so you can pretty much make it perfect. Glad to hear your guitar wasn't damaged by it though.
