Edge lll

hi,
sorry i dont know too much about ibanez i've never really taken intrest in them until the other day when i played one in a shop.
im considering buying one of these...
http://www.ibanez.com/eg/guitar.aspx?m=RGT42DX
and it has an edge 3 bridge, i've heard that the edge 3 trem is really bad and dont last long is this true? and if it is can i replace the edge 3 with an original edge tremolo or any other better edge tremolo without any modifications to the body?

cheers

Re: Edge lll

I've heard a few complaints about the Edge III, but I can tell you my older Ibanez had one and I had it for 2 years without any kinda problem whatsoever, worked perfectly. That said, I REALLY dig my Schaller Floyd Rose. Probably the best and most reliable tremolo ive used.

Re: Edge lll

Edge III works perfectly fine if you know how to set up your guitar... properly. I have an RG350 (MII) with an Edge III and it works perfectly fine. Not only that, I'd say it feels better than an OFR.

Also, if you hate it that much, you can swap out the Edge III for an OFR without any routing required.

Re: Edge lll

I echo the above statements. The Edge III is fine, and most of the people spouting off, badly about them are just repeating crap they heard. I've had mine for 2 years or so, and have never had a problem with it. One of my favorite trems, too, so far, just not as stout as the original Edge.
If you buy it, play it for a decent amount of time, before you waste possible money on a trem replacement. You just may find it's not needed.

Re: Edge lll

It depends on what you want to use it for. I actually like the Edge III (tried it new) better than the ZR or the Edge Zero (with the zero bar in). However, it is made from cheaper components and the design is one where that can become a factor down the road.

I would advise against that guitar though unless you are really set on it. The paint on the back of the neck is terrible even compared to other painted neck guitars. The new price is only about $50 less than an RG1570 (which is a much better made and loaded guitar), and the only advantages are that it is a neckthrough (not that big of a deal compared to an AANJ neck though) and a mahogany body. If it absolutely has to be mahogany and have a floyd rose tremolo, I would probably just go for an ESP or LTD in that price range.

+1, the problem is the materials that the trem is made of, and that makes it last less
