Edge problems...

The stability problem with my Edge has returned. If I raise or depress the bar even slightly, the guitar will go out of tune, some strings will go out significantly. I have a feeling it could be bad studs, although I fear it may be loose stud anchors loose. Last time I pulled the trem, the studs were loose as hell, and they don't look quite 90 degree to the body, although, I am not sure the set screws are locked, I can't actually seem to lock down the set screws, so it may just be a faulty set of studs. Are there any ways of checking for loose stud anchors without pulling the trem? I've just done a great setup on this thing and don't feel like spoiling it. I'll only know for sure when I get new studs, but I'm slightly concerned though.

Double check to make sure that your studs are locked. Usually, your knife edges on yoru trem will wear out before your studs wear out.

I'd take out the studs to makesure that you can actually screw them in and that they are working properly. (using the proper allen key helps too.. double check to see if your key is too small)

Re: Edge problems...

I've got the right key for the studs, they screw right in, but I'm not sure I have the correct key for the set screws, the one I have works, but I am not too sure, I can only seem to be able to screw the set screws in, but to remove the key I have to unscrew them again, leaving it unlocked. Hmm.

Re: Edge problems...

It definitely sounds like your set screw wrench is too small.

Re: Edge problems...

I'll go out and get my a 1.5mm wrench tomorrow, that's the correct size right? I'll try that, if I still have trouble I'll pull the trem and check if the studs are loose. If they are still loose, I assume it'll be a problem with the anchors? Would it be major work to fix loose anchors?

Re: Edge problems...

It depends on how big the problem is. If they are only a little loose, they can usually be glued effectively. [Method 1: run some superglue around them in place. Method 2: pull the anchors out, add wood glue (or epoxy), and reinstall the anchors.] If they have ovalled out a lot of wood, you will have to pull the anchors out, fill the holes, redrill and reinsert the anchors.

BTW: Yes, 1.5mm would be the right size for the stud set screws.

Hmm, if the set screws are indeed unlocked, would there be alot of movement? When I removed the trem a while back, as I said, they were loose as hell.

Maybe. Maybe not. Tighten them up and find out.

Re: Edge problems...

Ok, I just attempted to tighten them, but I can't seem to "feel" the set screw, so I'm not sure if I'm tightening it or not.

Re: Edge problems...

Ok, I finally managed to get these set screws locked. Studs are firm now, minimal to no movement. I think these terrible studs have something todo with it too, there is a nasty groove worn into the cutaway. I haven't loaded the springs back up yet, but I'll do it tomorrow. Too tired to deal with springs* now. Although, one thing that pisses me off is that in order to get the screws to lock, I had to sacrifice my perfect action
