Edge Trem and .10-.52 strings (yes...)

Heyya... i got a JS90th with an Edge Bridge which was blocked until now...
( pic: http://jazz.strikenet.de/saTa/guitar/js90th/js90_12.jpg )

With 8 years of guitar playing experience (i'm 17yrs old, btw) i start to get some interest in the tremolo... and since i got a guitar with one of the best trems around why not try it?

now the problem is that i know you should use FOUR springs for 010 strings... apart from the lack of a 4th spring (np, since i will need new ones anyways, i think) i think the strings (D'Addario EXL140) i use may be a problem:
1st e: 010
2nd B: 013
3rd G: 017
4th D: 030 (!)
5th A: 042 (!)
6th E: 052 (!)

i hate 009 stringsets, tho... so i'd rather leave the trem blocked if it's not good to use it with the strings i exclusively use on this guitar...

Long story short: is it possible to use the edge with these trings without major tuning instabilities? what must i do to reach tuning stability with these strings? or shall i just leave it alone and not mess around with it? :P

TIA and sorry for the bad english... i'm german

You definately want 4 springs with those gauges. You shouldn't have any problems, but you'll have to adjust the bridge angle when you do the switch to keep the knives perpendicular

Dude if you want to learn how to use a trem start out with a light string guage...those will make the trem much lighter to use and allow more nuances...and your saddles wont wear out so that you'll never be able to use them for .009s again...six new saddles will cost you 140 euros...
And you won't be able to tune higher than D with those heavy strings and 3 springs.

agree with Texter about string gauge.
anyway, if you cant live without .10s, put 4 springs back there.

How do you put 4 springs in an Edge tremolo?
The base of my LoPro Edge has only 3 holes under that metal bar that holds the springs in place. I believe the Edge is the same.
So where would you attach a 4th spring to the bridge?

i use 9-46 and sometimes a 10-46, but holy god those are some heavy strings, basically your A-string is pretty much the same as my E lolololololol! and i only use 3 springs

If you wanted to try the D'addario EXL110 (I think) which are 10 for the high E but 46 for the low E you could use the trem with 3 springs as well. I have been using these for years with no prob. If you want the 52 low E string you'll certainly need to add another spring.

You take off the little metal cover that holds the springs which is screwed on to the trem plate and you will see 2 more holes (the holes where the screws go in). Once you add another spring, you can't use that spring metal cover though.

I've managed to set up 10-52s on an Edge (standard tuning) with 3 springs parallel, and plays great.

Agreed. Do it. Four springs are a must though (in my opinion). It's really no problem though.

one screw can hold the spring claw lock on good enough...

And I agree with elcid...

I've had the same setup as Lonephantom, but tuned to drop-c and a .56 on the low-c I think.

Anybody ever try drilling the sustain block to add a fourth spring? Sticking the springs in the screw holes seems like a hack to me.

One screw works plenty fine. To me drilling a whole in your sustain block would be a hack job....
