Edge Tremolo stays NOT in tune (RG550)

Hi,

first sorry for my bad English.

My 99´s RG550 is driving me crazy.
The Edge Tremolo stay´s not in tune, a soft touch on the arm then all strings are sharp or flat.
The locking nut is tight, studs are ok, knife edges are sharp !!
Don´t know what to do, i installed a fourth spring, five springs..........nothing helped.

I have solled a 92´s RG570 with Edge Tremolo, this one stays in tune forever, but not for me anymore.
I hate me.

Someone?
Ty

Re: Edge Tremolo stays NOT in tune (RG550)

Hi Nuno,

the nut is fine, checked it.
The Trem. also, nothing special here.
Perhaps the springs, but it is possible that the tuning go so much sharp/flat with a soft touch on the Arm?
String Gauge is 09-42, 4 Springs.

Btw. i deinstalled the neck and surprise - my RG550 is a RG505DX, so what is that for a %"§$%.
Bought on ****, same Hardware as the 550, Gotoh Tuners, V-Pickups, Edge Trem. ect.
Serial is: F 99 26693
Is this one really made in 99?

If it's nothing dumb like not strtching strings, my bet is the stud inserts are loose or the trem is binding somewhere, like the pickguard [if it has one]

Hi Rich,

strings are carefully streched.
The inserts are tight.

The pickguard.....hmm, wait a minute.

Are the intonating screws tight? That could be a problem.

I wouldnt rely on the stamp on the neck, i took a neck of an RG570 and it had RG1620x stamped on it.

Re: Edge Tremolo stays NOT in tune (RG550)

Due to the model year its likely you have pinched studs, and FAT knife edges not dull knife edges but the fat ones. This is a problematic year as per rich's claims. You should try to get a set of the new studs, and go over richs tutorial at www.ibanezrules.com on how to sharpen the knife edges. THe chapstick fix may be perfect for your particular issue though.

Re: Edge Tremolo stays NOT in tune (RG550)

No matter how bad the studs or fatr the knives, if you push the bar down, let it return, fine tune, and push the bar down again and on return it's out of tune, that's not the problem.

Re: Edge Tremolo stays NOT in tune (RG550)

Thx for all your help here, i took springs out of my Axis SS and put them in the RG - things went better now, not perfect, but it comes.
New springs are orderd and on the way.

@ AirGuitar

The stamp is on the neck and body, it is a RG505 DX.
I found something on the web, someone has exactly the same guitar, yellow with greenish mirror guard, but mine is in better condition, looks like new, body and hardware.

yea, it's a friend of mine's, i took the pics. actually we were talking about that in another thread, and it had me looking for info about the 505: it's a 550, pretty much the same but with a Wizard II instead of an original Wizard. all the rest stays the same, but none of them came with maple board. batch number, no doubt
