Electrical Issues/Hearing voices, but not the usual ones.
So...my apartment has always been "funny" power-wise. It's on the second floor of a house that was built probably in the 1940's. As a result it's grandfathered by electrical codes. This is astonishingly evident by the lack of electrical outlets with grounds on them (i.e. none), the lack of plugs in some rooms at all (i.e. one) and how things dim entirely when certain devices are turned on (i.e. the toaster).
When I first moved in the most telling incident was doing a phone interview for a job on a cordless phone when I started hearing a radio broadcast of the Red Sox game. I attributed it to some weird anomaly and managed to finish the interview without serious incident (I didn't get the job and the Red Sox didn't score).
A year or so ago I was checking instrument cables which I gigged with. I had about 4 of them and they were all about 25 to 30 feet in length (I didn't use them all at once, the quantity had to do with losing, and then finding, backups). When I plugged into any amp in the house with this length of cable I got alot of noise at higher volumes and on high gain got some local sports-talk radio station.
Today I rigged up the audio out of my Mac G4 to my home theater/stereo system so I could kick back in the living room while I was writing and listen to internet blues radio. I tested the connection with an MP3 and let it play until it was done. I let it sit for a bit until I passed a speaker a little while later and heard the faint sound of voices. Again, sports-talk radio.
The only thing in common with the amps and the stereo was the electricity. All the plugs have the "artificial grounding" with the plastic 3 hole plug that screws into the jack plate; I'm pretty careful about that sort of thing and have been told that it's pretty effective...I may have been lied to though.
So...the question I have is what the hell is going on and is there any way to make it stop? I'm not so much as concerned in that order but would like to be able to check a long cable or leave my stereo on for internet radio and not hear voice (well....more than the usual ones).
Thanks...
