Exposed Coil Humbucker's - How would this sound on my FP?

Just for shats and giggles, I was wondering if anyone has ever tried taking that ribbon off the pick-ups, to expose the coils. I know Gisbon does this with their Gothic series guitars, and it says it gives the guitars a wicked sound...so even though they are probably just blowing smoke up their own asses, has anyone ever tried this?

Thanks!

I don't think the ribbons do anything but hide the copper windings. It's purley cosmetic. It's just a strip of nylon glued to the pickup. If you want to expose your windings:biggrin:, I won't look.....hehehe.

Exposed Coil Humbucker's

Actually, it probably protects the windings as well. AFAIK, pup winding is usually done w/ wire coated w/ laquer or shellac, anyway, some thin, fragile substance with a high dialectric constant as an insulator. The benefit is that the insulation is thin, so you can pack more winding in the same space for a hotter pup (same is true for transformers and motor windings). BUT, if you chip it *(the insulation) you'll get shorts and you're off to buy a new pup.

FWIW,

Exposed Coil Humbucker's

I think they're referring to the fact that these pickups don't have Gibson's customary nickel covers over the bobbins.

They should have written “exposed bobbin pickups.” I don't think they're saying that they've removed the protective ribbon from the actual coil windings.

As wyldbill suggested, that'd be rather foolish.
