Pull up stays sharp, push down stays flat.I've had new springs and new posts fitted and its still the same (slight improvement though), everything else seems tight and correct.
She's a 2000 7vwh with lo-pro,which reading rich's site was the worst period for post/knife edge probs, and i have looked at the knife edge and they look pretty chunky!!!

Re: Filing knife edges

Try some of the easier solutions first so you don't wind up making a dramatic change - I'd try the old chapstick on the trem studs before taking a file to my knife edges

Re: Filing knife edges

yes, or maybe checking the stability of the body inserts....
I recently had a tip that dripping low viscosity super glue around the inserts (not IN them) helps to stabilise the body inserts. - the glue is very low viscosity and so is easily absorbed into the wood fibres.
the luthier that told me said that he got a sspecific glue from maplin's and it was the lowest viscosity glue of three glues available.
it would help if course if you could identify where the movement was occuring...

Re: Filing knife edges

Could be the knife edges. Could be worn posts, too.

Re: Filing knife edges

Thanks for answering that, as I'm not in the UK, and had no answer, for him.

Basically, you just want to make sure the posts are lubed at the edge's contact points. Might help the trem return pitch, more accurately.

Re: Filing knife edges

Check every part that can effect tuning, next would be posts, then knife edge only if needed, I have fixed/filed quite a few knife edges, and it's best to know what the knife edge is suppose to look like and take your time achieving it.

Re: Filing knife edges

Thanks for the reply's guys.My local shop just fitted new posts.Thing is,they probably didn't stretch the strings properly before locking the nut,so i'll re-string her properly,do the chapstick/lipseal trick and see how she goes.

Re: Filing knife edges

Often the trem studs are not tight in the inserts. Take them out, wrap the threads with some teflon tape, then screw them back in. That will make them nice and snug and elminate any tuning problems from that.

Also, make sure the screws that hold the locking nut on are nice and tight. If they arent, the nut will move a bit, and that will screw up staying in tune.

The strings also need to be stretched out thoroughly and the nut clamps locked down TIGHT.
