fitting some knobs

i just got some old green ibanez vol and tone knobs, except i can't seem to fit them onto my guitar's pots (rg2550z). they seem to be about 0.001mm too small to fit. how do i do this?

Doesn't that drive you nuts? Smooth shaft, fine knurl...course knurl. Then there are those pots with shafts only long enough to go through a scratch plate... sheeesh!

mmm...i'll eventually find a way to somehow glue them on or something but that's kind of inconvenient...

Re: fitting some knobs

so i'm guessing the only way to properly fit the damn things on would be to get a knurled shaft...how easy is this to do?

Re: fitting some knobs

ok, sorry for the millionth post, but how do i find out if my guitar's vol and tone pots are linear or audio? i'm assuming they are 500k pots (for humbucking guitars). there's 654275 different pots on the bay and they're really cheap, so if i found the right one could i just whack it in?

Re: fitting some knobs

Get a drill and take it to the right width to fit.

If you look at the back of the pot it should say 'A' or 'B'
If it is "A" then it's audio taper or log
"B" is linear,
From memory the Jems have linear volume and log tone...

Well said. Ultimately, what really matters is the ohm value. As long as you use 500K pots, it will probably sound exactly the same as it does now(and if the pot has a different taper, you will get used to it quickly anyway). Changing pots is pretty easy and pretty cheap. Check out stewmac.com for replacements.

thanks, that's what i needed to hear. i guess if i get 1 audio 500k and 1 linear 500k i should be right. on a jem, is the tone linear or audio? same for vol.

Re: fitting some knobs

Just make sure they match your knobs, there are fine and course spline spit shaft pots. I found that out the hard way

yes, i realise that, i'm going to get a knurled pot. what i'm trying to find out is if the volume is linear or audio and if the tone is linear or audio.

Re: fitting some knobs

If you look at
http://www.ibanez.com/support/wiring/2005/JEM7.gif
The Volume is labeled "B" and the Tone "A".
So on that basis I'd go:
Volume Linear, Tone Log.

Re: fitting some knobs

You're backwards, the audio taper is for the volume, linear is for tone.
