Flattening cupped wood?

Suppose you've got a piece of mahogany with a good chunk of maple attached to it. Both pieces have become somewhat cupped, to the point that there's about 3/16" of a rise in the board at the middle of its 12" width. Any suggestions as to flattening the board, without cracking it, so that it will eventually remain flat? Running it through a planer is not an option...

Set it out in the sun with the convex side up.

Re: Flattening cupped wood?

Ok, that didn't work. I tried it in the sun/heat (did I mention the 90 degree days in Oklahoma lately?), I tried humidity, I tried pressing it. Zip. I'm open for other suggestions.

Normally, I'd just plane the sucker flat, but as a laminate, you'd see the curve where the maple meets the mahogany, and that'd look, well, crappy.

Re: Flattening cupped wood?

That seems rather unusual that a laminate would cup without breaking the glue bond. Once it's cupped, i don't think there's any way to get it back to where it was... chances are, it'd cup again anyway.

Why not remove the maple laminate, plane the mahogany and then re-top it?
