Floating Bridge angle?
Hey dudes,
just about to give my rg1550gxw a setup , and i wanted your input on bridge angles.
Ive always kept mine "flush" , in relation to the flat guitar surface.
But having read a bit on jemsite i now read that this is "flush"
but in this pic the bridge seems to be sitting UP at an angle - it looks like a wedge shape coming out of teh cavity.
What way do you guys have yours setup, and why ?

Re: Floating Bridge angle?
In the case of the Ibanez Edge Lo Pro, the base of the bridge should be parallel to the face of the guitar. The top of the bridge has an upward angle in it which is why you use the base, because it's flat.

Re: Floating Bridge angle?
As stated above, the tops of the Edge and Lo Pro are at an angle compared to the base. In that picture, for instance, if you were to see the bottom edge of the tremolo, it would be parallel to the surface of the guitar.

Re: Floating Bridge angle?
You dont want the trem parallel to the body, you want the knife edges parallel to the body. With Floyds and the Edge pro's, the knife edges are parallel with the trem body, or part of the trem body (Floyd). Edge's and Lo-Pro's knife edges arent parallel with the top of the trem, hence why it looks angled.

Re: Floating Bridge angle?
See the marked-up picture attached. I added the yellow line that denotes the "bottom" of the bridge and hence how it's parallel to the body.

Re: Floating Bridge angle?
Yes, I agree with everyone else. I get the best flutter when the
knife edges are parallel and the bottom of the tremolo is parallel
with the surface of the body.

Re: Floating Bridge angle?
sounds like a disturbing design flaw...
They could have just as easily made the top LOOK flat
so as not to confuse people.
They call that Engineering?
NEXT!!

Maybe they wanted to facilitate the evolution of their previous bridge which had a slanted top as well.... Did you ever think of that? Not to mention I prefer the thick baseplate of the Ibanez Edge and Lo-Pro Edge to that of the "thin" Floyd Rose and licensed Floyd Rose products...

Re: Floating Bridge angle?
I totally agree with you on the thicker base plates being prefferable.
And Ibanez makes a better trem than any FR, no doubt.
But still no reason to cause the confusion with the angle.
If you want to change from this to that, change!
But sorry for my Seinfeld reference. Nothing personal.
Less than perfect engineering just bugs me sometimes.

Yeah, I guess the thickness really doesn't have anything to do with whether or not it's flat. The Edge Pro is a good example of that I suppose. It's a lot flatter than the Edge or Lo-Pro. I still think it's because they wanted to to look like the previous bridge, the Pro Rock 'R. They are very similar in appearance, the Pro Rock 'R being more dramatic (the angles are exaggerated).

Re: Floating Bridge angle?
Without knowing the details of why they designed the bridge the way they did, it's a stretch to call it a "design flaw". After 15+ years, don't you think they'd have corrected this flaw ?

Re: Floating Bridge angle?
OK. backtracking again. Not so much a flaw as an oversight.
Likely never THOUGHT of whether it matters or not. It LOOKS cool
as is. Once the machining is in place at the plant, it is expensive to remake and reset the dies to build another that looks a little different but essentially is exactly the same.
Not easy to imagine every possibility.
Whoda thunk people would hijack jets just to crash them into buildings and kill themselves?
You guys sound like YOU built this thing and are taking it/ME a little too seriously.
If they would have done thorough market research and allowed 20 people to install and set them up on guitars, I think more than one person would have questioned "WHICH part is supposed to be level?"

Re: Floating Bridge angle?
took a bit, but I found a decent view of it.
Yeah, that LOOKS uncomfortable to play. Gotta imagine my hand riding on the bridge constantly.
Back to the original point though, why not make the next series
with a flat top?
