Question

Floyd rose on a Pacifica?

Hi everybody,

I was wondering if it would be possible to replace the bridge of this guitar...

...with a Floyd rose original?

I'd also like to be able to raise notes, a third with the whammy bar. I'd have to have a space cut out of the body for that...

But is this possible? You see, the neck of the Yamaha has a radius of 13 3/4" = 350mm, and on the Floyd rose website it said that all the nuts of the Floyd rose originals have a different radius (10" = 254mm). So would this be possible? Or would it cause problems?

Also, if one installed a D-tuna, would it require a bigger space to be cut out of the body, in order to still be able to raise notes a third?

I've owned a Yamaha Pacifica 604W for nine years, and it's still my main guitar, even though I also own an Ibanez. I'd love to own another Pacifica, with a whammy bar. A D-tuna would be cool, because then I could play all the Satch stuff on a single guitar, without having to have a seperate one for all of the drop-d stuff.

Kind regards,
Myst

Re: Floyd rose on a Pacifica?

There has been a production model Pacifica, which had a Floyd rose a long time ago. But I don't know if that guitar had different specs than the current ones.

Also, do Sperzel tuners work in combination with a Floyd rose? They allow for strings to be changed so much faster.

Kind regards,
Myst

Exactly. My Yamaha has a Wilkinson tremolo, which is very stable, but I can only use it for very subtle things. It would be great to have a Floyd rose equipped Yamaha Pacifica.

I've searched the internet. Check this out:

This is a modified Yamaha Pacifica 912, which is the production model I mentioned. Apparently, it has a radius of 300 - 400mm, which is also found on the current models! So Newbieguitarmaker, I guess that means that it can be done.

By the way, here is the 912 as it was released by Yamaha:

Myst

If you have a D-tuna you need to have the bridge flush to the body so you won't be able to pull up at all

It can be done, do a google on a guitar tech in your area, in the UK they charge about £60 to route out a floyd, that seems to be the going rate. The pickups look like Seymour Duncan duckbuckers.

Re: Floyd rose on a Pacifica?

My friend has about fifteen US Made Floyd equippied Pacificas (his celing is about to cave in because of the inordaninate amount of gear, 60+ guitars, 30+ amps, 3 drum sets, huge mixing board, hundreds of effects, etc). Anyways, the Pacificas are amazing. I consider them on par with JEM's.

That's amazing. Yamaha Pacificas are great, yeah. And they're very affordable. The guitar I'm considering to buy is about $500.

It's going to be great. I guess in order to have a D-tuna and still be able to pull up a third, would require some deep routing. It may be a cool idea to have it. Maybe I'll just put the Floyd rose on it, though. To spend a lot of money, just for a hand full of songs... I dunno.

I'll keep you posted on developments, everybody.

Kind regards,
Myst
