Fret Buzz..

Today I had to set up my guitar as the guy I usually go to is unwell and won't be back for a while.

I've got it intonated and my action set up nearly how I like it (medium/lowish). However since I've switched to 10's on my RG I'm now getting Fret Buzz on the G String at the first fret. So when I play the string open it buzzes, but if I hold the string on the first fret theres no buzz. I tried raising the action a lot higher to see if this sorted it but to no avail.

I don't really mess with my guitar setup too often but in this case I have no choice for now. I was thinking that I'll try adjusting the Truss rod to give the neck a little more bow to hopefully get rid of this then re-adjust my action to where I'd like it.

Obviously I know not to just barge in and start cranking it but does anyone have any tips for adjusting the bugger? Or should I leave this alone completely and try something else first?

Cheers.

On this page somewhere is a link that will take you to a lot of helpfull set up tips. Follow those to the letter and you will have the best playing guitar you want.

Here is a clue.

Yeah, I already had a read over Rich's page. I'm going to try giving the neck some relief later and see if that sorts it. I'm sure if I take my time and make small adjustments I'll be fine.

About time I learnt this stuff anyway. I've been playing for ages but never bothered to learn much about a "proper" setup.

Anyone else had a similar problem to mine? What worked for you?

Cheers.

With the thicker strings you might need to shim the nut a tad to avoid the buzzing you have.

Bingo. If you have buzzing at the first fret with the open strings, you need a shim.

Yes. Buzzing open but not fretted at the first is definitely the nut. Shim the nut (only on that side if you like) and you should be good.
