fret dress prefect machine thingy

I once read about some machine that some places have now, that they use to fret dress guitars to perfect measurements to allow really low action. I forget what these are called, can anyone help me out? a link?

I've had one of my guitars done in the past. Really good results but you still need a skilled operator.

Re: fret dress prefect machine thingy

I had it done at Chandlers in London, not a cheap place, but one of the best in London, and it cost me £110 iirc. Not bad considering that was basically a full set up, reseating of 2 frets (which is what prompted it) fret level and recrowning.

About that, unless the $ slid even further today (oops, politics creeping in!)

Does anyone have any info on anyone offering PLEK services in Australia?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Re: fret dress prefect machine thingy

hey way... didn't ya had an RG7xx you had Plek'd? I was thinking of doing that to my 760 since I found a place that does it out on the west side of town.
Is it like a night / day difference in playability after it gets Plek'd?

Rock on!

Sydney Guitar Setups have a PLEK machine, but they don't really do the best fret finishing and polishing - I recommend you have a chat with Piers Crocker (9550 2991) - he is a luthier a couple of doors up from SGS, who seems to have a deal with them where he uses the PLEK to level the frets (if necessary), then does his own crowning and polishing - I think he's the best guy in Australia.

To the original poster, the PLEK machine won't remove any more fret than a good luthier - a fret level has to level the entire fret surface down to the lowest divot - so if you have big dents in your frets from a few years of use - that's where the fret surface will end up - often if the neck is bowed/twisted/bent you will need to remove even more to get back to a level plane - whoever you use should be able to advise you pretty quickly of whether you might be better putting your money into a refret.

Re: fret dress prefect machine thingy

Pleasure! Piers refretted my JEM VDY with Dunlop 6100 wire (ie: enormous) and did a PLEK setup - she is now just ridiculously easy to play - much nicer wire, at least to me, than the current 6105 used on the VWHs and BRMRs!
