Fret Problem?

Hi, i just bought a second hand neck and put it on. I was told it from a rg570. Basically im getting a few dead notes and i can see that its caused by some frets sitting slightly lower than the rest, and quite alot of the frets seem to have raised in the middle so there is a slight gap between the freboard and the fret, is this normal? Does this mean i need a fret level? Or can the high frets be tapped down? Any help appreciated,

thanks

Re: Fret Problem?

The raised frets need to be reseated and then they need to be leveled and dresssed. Take it to a tech. They come back all shiney and new.

Re: Fret Problem?

Like Cosmic says, unless you can do it yourself. how worn are the frets ?
do you have anyone local that can do it ?
I can do it for you if needed.

Re: Fret Problem?

Ok thanks for the help. Would this be possible to do it myself? Is it that hard? And the frets dont have much wear atall. Just out of curiosty how much would you charge for the work Jaden?

Thanks again

Re: Fret Problem?

ok, been meaning to do this for a while now. Jaden was very helpfull and pointed me in the right direction so il give this a go myself. Just come across a slight issure, Ive come to sticking the frets back down where they have risen. Basically they all look to have risen the same amount in the middle of the fret apart from a few, is it normal for frets to rise roughly the same amount over the fretboard? Ive tried pushing the frets down by hand and they dont seem to be moving atall, can i use a clamp and gently tighten it until the fret is toughing the fretboard again? Would this damage the neck atall?

cheers

Re: Fret Problem?

if you are going to clamp you should use a cault with the fingerboard radius otherwise you will end up with 'stepped' frets.
I dont know why that would happen to all the frets but:
1. is the neck off the guitar ?
2. did you loosen the truss rod at all and is the neck dead straight along the wood, not the frets ?

Re: Fret Problem?

I thought i may have to use a radiused block on the frets when clamping so il make one up. The neck isnt off this guitar and im not sure wheather its japanese made or not, is there a way to tell? its a wizard 2 and it just says ibanez and then rg series in smaller letters on the headstock. Havent got the fretboard level with the wood yet, would this be causing the problem?

thanks

Re: Fret Problem?

is there a serial number on the neck ?
depending on the letter it begins with, that will tell you where it came from.

Re: Fret Problem?

Theres no serial number on the neck atall, only a print at the bottom which says AUG 00 which i guess means it was made in august 2000. Also the truss rod adjustment is done with an allen key not the hex tool like on some necks, does this help?

Re: Fret Problem?

the serial is on the rear of the headstock but, dont matter where the neck is from, you need to sort those frets.
im a little worried that they are ALL raised in the centre.

Re: Fret Problem?

Theres no serial on the back of the headstock or anywhere on the neck. I thought it was also a bit strange that all of the frets are raised in the middle apart from about 2 or 3, so should the fret be in contact with the fretboard all the way along the fret and no gap atall between them at any point? Maybe the frets were never glued in at the factory and have just all lifted in the same way? Do they allways glue frets in the factory?

thanks again

Re: Fret Problem?

Pete,
I dont know if they glue them at the factory, the only time I refretted an ibanez, it had already been done once and the guy had superglued the new set.
its really difficult to make any kind of judgement on a neck without having it in your hands so I couldnt comment on the frets lifting, perhaps someone else here has seen that, I never have yet

Re: Fret Problem?

Ok, i think il just try the clamping with glue and hope that works.
I know this probably isnt necessary but would it be a better idea to actually pull all the frets out and then reglue them so i know il never get this problem again?

thanks
