Frickin´Heck! Rusty frets!

yeah, i just noticed that my brand new schecter omen 7 has slightly rusty frets!
it´s most likely because of it being transported over the ocean by boat, and the salty humid air doing it´s job on it...

so yeah, what do i do to fic the frets, steel wool or something?

Just remove the neck. Or is it neck-thru?

Re: Frickin´Heck! Rusty frets!

it´s bolt-on yeah... i´m thinking i´ll let the guy at the store do it when i take it in for a complete setup (getting it for free)... i´m also ordering a dimarzio Evo 7... anyone remember me nagging endlessly about pickups, and finally deciding on the blaze neck model in the bridge? yeah, i changed my mind AGAIN :P

Re: Frickin´Heck! Rusty frets!

It's easy to do the frets yourself. Use masking tape and tape off everything except the frets, get some 0000 grade steel wool and shine 'em up.

Re: Frickin´Heck! Rusty frets!

I would mask the board, personally. I do it the same way as Rich did in his guide.

Re: Frickin´Heck! Rusty frets!

I use 3600 micromesh and 6000. You dont have to worry about the steel wool particles that way.

With a neck through guitar it makes it easier.

I always tape off the fretboard.

Re: Frickin´Heck! Rusty frets!

S-man, what is this micromesh stuff all about? I saw you talking about it before but I couldn't find any when I went looking. BTW, I always take the neck off and do the steel wooling outside in the yard so no need to worry about the steel particles.

Re: Frickin´Heck! Rusty frets!

It kinda like wet sand paper. It has a cloth type backing.

3600 dry is about equal to 0000 ssteel wool.

They use it for aircraft windows, etc. My nieghbor is a jet mechanic. I get it from him.

Here is some info.

Re: Frickin´Heck! Rusty frets!

Oh cool, thanks for the linkage. So 6000 must be ultra ultra fine. Good stuff, I'll check it out.

Damn straight! 0000 is very fine, but still able to scratch and gouge into the board. Especially since you're going against the grain.

Hmmm....that micromesh looks very interesting. Thanks for the link S-Man
