Further Sanding Advice Needed for Natural Finish! Pics!

Hey guys. Today I Heat gunned the finish off my old Ibanez Gio. I'm planning on doing some sort of stain, maybe a dark/mahogany color because the shades off the wood on the guitar seem to be inconsistent. Does this seem like the right idea? In the pics you can see the slant where you rest your right arm while playing. That area seems to be really dark. Also, you can see how some parts are whiter than others. Is that just a sanding problem? What grit should I use to fix some of these problems? Advice would be really appreciated. I really don't want to paint it by the way. Really want to stain it, even if it doesnt come out absolutely beautiful. Its just going to be a beater sorta guitar that I bring to school and such.
Thanks!

Hmm, it looks like to me that you didn't get all the way through some of the primer. Especially noticeable on the front upper horn and the belly cutaway. Try sanding it a little more, that should even out the colour.

Thanks. What about on the back of the guitar(at the bottom of the last picture)? Dont think primers left there but still sand down more to even out the color?

really inspiring me. I want to remove the finish from my RG and do a stain too. How does the heat gun method work? I've read that with a heat gun and a putty scraper, you can pry up most of the thick plastic finish. I would love to try, so please let me know.

All in all, your progress looks great. I'd say, coming from a few warmoth strat re-finishes, that you should start with something as low as 100 or 120 and sand until it the color is even, then switch to 180 for a couple swipes, then 220. I don't usually see the point in sanding any higher than 220 grit. But some people say that you should sand to 300 if you're going to use solvent based finish and it makes the finish go on a little more evenly. I usually do water based finishes, so it raises the grain and there isn't a point sanding much past 180 or 220.

What are you planning to do about the green trem cavity? Wait, I suppose you won't see the trem cavity cause it looks like it uses a pickguard.

I have a suggestion for finishes. I recently did a guitar with varathane gel stain and varathane crystal diamond waterbased poly. It was very easy to do, and I think it came out quite well. The reason I suggest this is cause it's really easy to find, home depot has it, it's cheap, it's really easy to do. I'll dig up a picture.

I agree that a dark stain would look good. But if you get rid of the rest of that primer, and the color is more consistent, perhaps any color stain will work. Again, looks good, and keep posting pics!

That's it!

I have been down this road a bit. My advice is get a belt sander with very fine grit and give it a thorough once over, then spend a day (and I do mean 8 long hours) sanding by hand from 120 grit down to maybe 800, then break out the wire wool. The more you sand it the better it gets, and yes you really do have to remove all the marks from the previous sanding.

Once it looks pretty even then oiling/staining will work. If it looks uneven when you start, it wont magically get better unfortunately.

What you have does look good so far.
