Gloss vs satin Wizard necks
I've got a 1998 RG570 with a gloss
wizard
neck. It's OK, but I think I'd prefer a
satin neck
.
What year did they change to satin from gloss for the wizard necks? Any way to (relatively easily and safely) "degloss" a neck?

low abrasive sandpaper. Ankhnaten told me on another forum he used to just lightly sandpaper the backs of LTD viper necks to get rid of the sticky. Just be careful with it.

Re: Gloss vs satin Wizard necks
Yeah, thanks. I had considered sanding, but I was wondering if there was something you can paint on a gloss finish to etch into the gloss a bit. The problem with sanding, particulalry on a curved surface, is to avoid going through the finish completely at one spot, and then you got a refinish job on your hands (doh!).
Anyone know when the satin finish necks came in? Useful to know if I was going to buy another neck later on...

I'd just recommend sanding the neck down to bare wood and refinishing with Birchwood Casey Tru Oil and Gunstock Wax. That's what Ernie Ball uses on their necks, and it's really easy to apply. You get a nice, smooth feel (just play an Ernie Ball if you haven't already to see what I mean).

That's a good thought -- I'd have to find out what would be the locally available equivalent finishes, though (we don't have the Casey brand here, but I guess the Gunstock Wax is generic???)

Tru Oil is the brand name, but "gunstock" oil is what you are after.

Re: Gloss vs satin Wizard necks
Interesting thread.
I bought my RG550 back in 1990, and have since bought an RG1527 and RG1077xl in the last few years. The 550 definitely has a more glossy and sticky feel to it, but I always thought that was due to it's age......sweat etc. evetually coating the finish. I cannot remember what it was like originally, but reading this things have started to make a bit more sense!
One other thing, does anyone use any kind of product to keep the satin type finishes nice and smooth like a baby's bum?
Cheers
Max
