glue on JEM. HELP ME

Hi,

first off all, sorry for my bad english an thanx for any suggestion, so here's my problem.

I bouhgt an Ibanez JEM 7 VWH on ebay last week. Im very happy with it except one thing, the seller told me (an i saw it one the, very thiny) pic there is an sticker (hemp leaf) behind the floyd rose. I said its okay, Ill whatch it and if it looks good i'll keep it. So today i got the guitar an...surprise....wasnt a sticker...it was a plastic hemp leaf glued on the guitar....i got it off but theres still much glue on the lac. Does anyone know how to fix my little problem? Nice guitar....but only without glue.

Thx,

Kurt

First, try to find out what kind of glue it is. If it's super glue, there are solvents that will remove it. Chances are, if it IS super glue, it's probably melted the finish a bit so it'll leave a scar. There will probably be some sort of finish blemish no matter what kind of glue it was (unless it's Elmer's glue!) I'd try a warm, damp cloth first and see if it's a water-soluble adhesive.

I knew I'll probably some finish blemish but better than the glue(which is also brown by the leaf). I asked the seller but he doesnt know what kind of glue it was....the problem is i dont know how the lac will reakt on solvents.

But thank you so far.

that clearcoat is impervious to most solvents... not that you want to try.

i'd use a hot rag or gentle steam on it to see if the glue softens, then rubbing alcohol and elbow grease if needed. i'd then try lighter fluid and as a last resort "goo gone" citric acid type (not paint thinner type) glue remover... glen

If the glue is brown, it MIGHT be a type of hide glue or wood glue...if that's the case, a warm, damp cloth might remove it

Use mineral spirits on a rag and rub until it comes off. Wear gloves and don't breathe it. Mineral spirits is excellent for this kind of thing, and will dissolve most adhesives except superglue or epoxy which you'll probably need acetone for. The poly-ester finish on the Jem shouldn't be harmed by either of those solvents, but just in case, take the back trem cover off and wipe some of each solvent on the paint inside the cavity to see if it will react. If it doesn't do anything weird, then you are safe to try it on the front of the guitar. Good luck.

It is most commonly used as a paint thinner. I think it has benzene as the primary solvent in it. You must have it over there, but I don't know what it would be called. Here is a link to a place that sells it here:

<a href = http://woodworker.com/cgi-bin/FULLPRES.exe?PARTNUM=849-328&ov=2988&KEY=MINERAL+SPIRITS>http://woodworker.com/cgi-bin/FULLPRES.exe?PARTNUM=849-328&ov=2988&KEY=MINERAL+SPIRITS</a>

I don't think they'll ship it overseas, but I'm sure you can find it in a hardware or paint shop locally.
