Guitar body refinish?
On my continuing task to get a new guitar, I've come across the possibility of a
S670
. You can see the specs here:
http://www.ibanez.co.jp/products/eg_...&series_id=230
My question is, how hard is it to apply a lacquer finish to the guitar? The original is satin, and I'm not a big fan. I like reflective guitars
Would I need to completely sand down and re-do the entire finish or is it simpler than that? I actually like the color and would want to keep it in place. Just really want the lacquer applied.

Re: Guitar body refinish?
Don't get me wrong, the finish is gorgeous, and I agree it'd be even nicer in a gloss, but I'm not sure if it's worth attempting to DIY it, especially if you want pro results which I assume you would. Have you looked at the S470QM at all? Great gloss bursts finishes, and all of the same features as the s670 minus except for some nicer inlays and body binding on the s670. You'd save atleast $150 on the guitar, not to mention another $75-100 on finishing supplies to make the flat finish gloss.

Re: Guitar body refinish?
I would buy the S470QM if only it was available here in Brazil. Unfortunately, the single Ibanez importer in the country only brings what is available in the Brazilian catalog and that doesn't include the S470QM. The other options for the S line are kinda boring...they all Black, with the exception of the S470B, which comes in either red or sky blue.
Anyway, I'll see about finding this guitar on a store to play this weekend and see if the finish annoys me too much

Re: Guitar body refinish?
You could do it. What you would have to do is sand down the satin oils off the top of the guitar, then steel wool, then apply polyurethane.
http://www.minwax.com/products/water...yurethane.html
Just get a rag, dip it in the poly, then wipe in one direction over and over and over again being careful not to leave any bubbles. Let it sit on there for a minute or so, then wipe excess off. Next day, lightly steel wool with #0000 and repeat process. Reapeat this whole process about 10 times and you should get an ultra shiny surface. On the last application of the poly, don't steel wool it and just let it dry for about 4-6 days.
What I recommend is trying this whole process out on a spare piece of wood. Stain it and then do the tests.

Re: Guitar body refinish?
I just completely sanded down a Jackson Dinky I have, and refinished it to its natural wood.
I used ColorTone Guitar Lacquer shakem-up cans from Stew-Mac.
I used the satin finish, and it turned out awesome.
I might be wrong, but I think you might be able to rough up the surface of your guitar, and spray their gloss lacquer right over the top, then let it cure.
Definitely worth a call to Stew-Mac though. They were very helpful, and I am very happy with the results.
