Guitar wiring problems

Does anyone know the likely problem that is causing my guitar's volume pot to be more like an on off switch. There is variation in the volume, but it all happens within a degree or two or a turn. The guitar is recently built and I've tried changing the volume pot, so I'm assuming that its a wiring problem.

Cheers

Al

Re: Guitar wiring problems

Are the pickups passive or active and what pots are you using?

Re: Guitar wiring problems

Hi, the pups are passive, i'll have to open it up and check on the pots. The guitar is hum single hum with a 5 way blade switch going bridge, bridge and middle, middle, middle and neck, neck. then there's 3 micro switched, the first coil taps the neck, the second inverts the phase of the single coil and the third taps the bridge. one tone, and one volume.

Re: Guitar wiring problems

I wonder if something like this could be caused by one of the pots being wired incorrectly? I'd probably pull the tone control out of the loop, which should be removing a single wire, and see if that changes anything.

Re: Guitar wiring problems

I remember I had a problem similar and it was jack. I can't quite remember exactly what was wrong but I know it was the jack because it worked after I installed a new one.

Re: Guitar wiring problems

By that do you mean the socket? I might also point out that theres a slight crackle when volume changes occur that can be heard if the amp volume is turned up.

Re: Guitar wiring problems

Replace your linear-taper volume pot with an audio-taper pot and it will be fine.

I don't think that would be it unless it's neither a log or linear pot.

Re: Guitar wiring problems

An audio-taper pot is a "log" pot.
