Having problems with trem angle...

Hi, I'm having some problems getting the angle right with the Edge Pro. When all the strings are totally slack, I start tuning the low E then proceed to the A, but by this time the angle is already parallel, so obviously tuning the other strings is going to make the trem raised and very negative. Also there is no room to maneuver as far as the springs go, as they have been adjusted to either one of the two extremes.

The main problem when tuning is that once I have tuned 2 strings by the time I tune another they are both out of tune again because there is an extreme change in the angle of the trem, therefore the angle is just negative.

I havn't had major problems in the few years that I have had my RG, but I have never really got to grips with it, I have just got by without any major adjustments.

Can anyone tell me exactly where to start? what should the angle be like initially? and what exactly should the status of the strings/springs be when I start? I have read tutorials, but I need something in a box...nice and basic.

Any help much appreciated.

Re: Having problems with trem angle...

Try putting a piece of rolled up card (or something) to hold the bridge roughly at the right angle before you start to tune. Be careful to potect the surfaces with something soft to make sure you don't scratch the body finish.

Tune roughly to pitch and then remove the block and release the bridge so that it is supported by the strings and springs. Re-tune and check the bridge angle. If its tipped too far forward screw the claw screws into the body to full it it back, or the other way round if the angle is too shallow. Several more iterations and you should get there.

Check out Ibanezrules.com tech section - That'll explain it far better than I have

Re: Having problems with trem angle...

Thanks for the reply, I will check out your method later.

I'm just wondering, if the trem is as negative as it can go and I carry on tuning (sharp) this can cause damage can't it?

Edit: Also, can I adjust the angle while the studs are locked?

Thanks.

Re: Having problems with trem angle...

When you change strings (all of them) do you take all of them off and put the new ones on or do you change them individually, i.e. take one off put the new on and the string and so forth?

Regards

André

Re: Having problems with trem angle...

I did them individually, but something obviously went wrong, perhaps I was never in tune to begin with.

Did you try the Ibanezrules.com tutorial as mentioned above?

Re: Having problems with trem angle...

Yeah, I have read it over a couple of times, it only helps for minor adjustments.

Can the angle be altered if the studs are locked? I have never done it, just wondering though...

Re: Having problems with trem angle...

Hi
When you exchanged the strings individually, did you fit the exact gauge string to the ones taken off.
ie fitting heavier strings will have greater tension and will pull trem forward more (if you havent made any adjustments)

Re: Having problems with trem angle...

A couple more questions:-

1) Was the guitar tuned to a different tuning to the one your trying to tune it to.
2) Did you try blocking the trem (as per Markg5150 thread)? if so what happened?
3) Are all the existing springs still in position on trem block?

Re: Having problems with trem angle...

how many springs do you have on the trem? sounds like you only have like 2 springs on it...and not in a "/ \" formation. you should put 3 on it in a "III" that will cause more tension on the trem and keep your trem flatter upon restringing. if this isn't the problem, try to post a pic of your trem cavity and trem to better diagnose.

Re: Having problems with trem angle...

1) I was tuning to standard, same as it was previously.
2) I havn't tried blocking, It's all fine at the moment but I need to know for next time.
3) Springs are fine, and I have 3.

When I restring in a week or so, I'll post some pics of what's going on.

Thanks again.
