Help painting my guitar

Ok i have an Ibanez RG7321 and i really dont like black at all. So i was thinking maybe to repaint it, but that might cost too much money. So iv been thinking could i just sand off the clear coat and just paint a cool little picture on the black paint under it?

If thats possible i have a few questions.

What kinda of paint should i use to paint the designs and stuff on it? What should i use to re-clearcoat it once its finished? Is sanding off the clearcoat difficult? Am i going about this the wrong way? Iv never really done any guitar modifications ever and im kinda nervous about messing up my guitar.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

You can start your project by visiting Project Guitar.com. They have a lot of great tutorials on the subject.

I mostly just wanted to know how tough of a job this would be. Im still considering if i want to do it or not.

Painting a guitar, especially for the first time, will take a lot of time, patience and attention to detail. If you don't have all of those three, you probably will not be happy with the end result.

Refinishing a guitar isn't inherently difficult. Making it look really good and professional is.

Read through the finishing tutorials I linked to on Project Guitar.com so then you can figure out if you want to commit to doing it.

Ok thanks. Im not planning on doing the actual painting. Im probably going to sand it down and refinish it, my artistic friend will be doing the paintings.

The terms painting and refinishing are interchangeable.

Re: Help painting my guitar

What i was hoping to do is sand off just the clearcoat then just have the black paint painted on then have that refinished.

Is this possible.

I have never done any guitar mods ever.

Re: Help painting my guitar

Who's putting it back together after you paint it? Sounds expensive. Black paint and then clear-coated right or do you want to paint it black and then refinish it LOL.
