Help with stiff rg550 neck?

Hi,

my rg550 neck wont concave as I would like it to. The bolt is all loose but the strings dont pull enough to make the neck concave. It is just flat.

Is there something I can do to make the neck behave(not taking account filing the neck concave, luthiers neck heat-treatment or neck shimming)?

Also, i wonder if putting some 060-013 strings on the guitar would hurt the Edge knife edges? (I feel pretty stupid with this question)

That's a truss rod issue. I'm sure there's an FAQ somewhere on this site about truss rod adjustments.

Did you have the tremolo blocked before you started tuning it up? --Jason

Re: Help with stiff rg550 neck?

Is it flat or actually backbowed? If it is flat, you may be able to do fine with a careful setup and a flat neck. Otherwise, things start getting harder.

You can try putting some heavy strings on it and let it sit for a while. It might take some curve back and even hold it when you switch back to a light gauge. It's worth a try. Otherwise, since you don't have a dual-action truss rod, you are looking at something more complicated. A luthier with a neck jig could add the desired amount of relief into the frets ... or with some more work out of the fretboard, or heat treat the neck, etc. It gets more expensive as you go. Good luck.

I haven't found a gauge yet that will damage the knife edges....
