High E string snapped during intonation adjust...Grrr

Just put on a set of 10-46's on my JS 1200 (trem blocked), switching from the usual 9-42 set...Was adjusting the intonation on the high E, and while tuning it up to pitch, heard a high pitched squeak-ish type of sound and then the string snapped...I don't get it...that's never happened to me when doing the intonation. I made sure the ball ends were super snug at the posts and that each wind was under the other. Should I have stretched the strings beforehand, or would that have just snapped the string as well? I'm kind of stumped here...Any help will be rewarded with a smoked ham.

If you were pulling back on the saddle the string pressure climbs much faster than with the tuning machines, so you should slack them a bit before hand. If not, bad string maybe?

Nah, I was in the process of tuning up with the tuning machines using a planet waves winder, and it snapped when I was almost at pitch. I never adjust the saddles without loosening the string significantly first. Could have been a defective string...Happens sometimes I guess...

Probably a bad string. Wouldn't be surprised if you were using ernie balls?

Nah, D'Addario EXL 110's I believe...Just bought another one for a buck and it's working out fine. The new guage is taking some getting used to though...Although there's a bit more volume, I wouldn't say the tone is better. Might switch back to 9's.
