high fret

I have a couple of frets that are a little high. do I need special files to file these down or will some fine sandpaper do it? I have zero experience doing this but it is only 1 or 2 fret that need slightly adjusted. Would I be better off having a luthier do this? Thanks.

Yeah, take it to a luthier. It won't cost a lot to get them levelled and it's worth paying for. If you have no experience and the right tools you can screw it up completely. For what it costs to have done, it's not worth messing with.

Re: high fret

agreed, this job isn't like other areas of setup where you should try to learn to do it yourself - fret dressing is more involved and requires special tools and plenty of experience to get the profile and radius right and get all the fret wire level.

take it to a pro, bro

Re: high fret

YOu would take it to a repairman or technician, not a luthier. Luthiers build guitars.
It's not that difficult. i do it all the time. I'm always finding a high fret here & there on various guitars. You do need a straight edge. I bought some from StewMac. The small ones are good for spot levelling. The small straight edge will rock on the high fret. Just sand it (#220 or #320) until it doesn't rock. Then polish with progressively finer sandpaper grades.

I definatly advocate doing it yourself...but dont agree with the above advice... you will just flat top your frets ...

There are plenty of tutorials and useful information on www.projectguitar.com... more then enough to get you through it... and once you do youll never look back...

all you need is a striaght edge, a fret crowning file and some 0000 grade steel wool.

That's true, you could add a step and crown them, if you are concerned. I used to be but I eventutally just left them flat and doesn't make much difference.
