How do I measure neck pocket dimensions?

I want to get a neck made or buy a neck for a project but I don't know the neck pocket dimensions and it's hard to assume a number because it is for a 21 fret neck so:

1. How do I measure the appropriate dimensions on the pocket for a new neck? and;

2. Can I fit a 22 fret neck into the pocket because there seems to be alot of space on the 21 fret neck at the end of the fretboard?

the neck pocket usually refers to the width of the pocket. use a ruler.

Im pretty sure you can put a 22 fret neck on a 21 fret guitar. As long as the scale is the same. Im doing a strat project and Im hoping the 22 fret neck I just bought for my 21 fret body will be ok.

Ok I've measured my neck pocket and it's 2 inches 3 notches after that, but in Neck discriptions it says 2-3 16", where and what is the 16?

2 3/16" as in three sixteenths of an inch. That's probably what your "notches" are. 2 3/16" is probably a standard Fender neck pocket. If you look at Warmoth or one of the other neck suppliers websites, they will probably have a nice picture of the dimensions. Most places just sell those standard "Fender" heels.

The difference between the tele and strat heels is that the tele is perfectly flat and the strat has a slight radius. One of those vendors should have decent pictures on the website to show the difference. Good luck!

Luckily I've noticed that myself. I could still use confirmation on the fret number....

Callen is right on prydogga. The 22 fret necks get that 22nd fret by having a slight lip that extends over the body of the guitar by just 2-3 millimeters. Check out some pics online and you can probably notice it.
