I dont know for sure, everyone will tell you differently, but I read somewhere for a good oil finish on a guitar, you should do it once a day for a week, then once a week for a month, once a month for a year, then once a year for ever, to keep it nice and smooth.
So, about 5-7 coats.

It is up to you really. You can apply as little or as much as you want depending on the finish desired.

Wow! I didn't know this. I built a jem knockoff with an alder body purchased on **** and after staining it dark walnut I applied two coats of tung oil and have never oiled it since. I guess I should probably apply a few more coats?

It depends on the mood of my girl.
Sometimes she wants 1 oil coat + massage
Sometimes she wants honey + fruits

With Danish Oil I use 2 coats. Anymore and it gets too thick.

Less is more, unless you enjoy sanding back to the wood and starting again as I had to.
