Unhappy

I am so mad at my Jem!!!!

Ok. Yes Im stupid. You can all flame this thread.

I just got new strings. Blue Steels. 9-42's. I just installed them now.

When all the strings were on, i notice a lot of buzz coming from my Low E and A strings. All up the fretboard. It wont stop!!!!

And worse than that. When i get the angle of the bridge perfect, i pull up on the trem and it doesnt return to the perfect angle.

Now i really wanna just throw my jem into a mulcher!

Please. I read the Action height section and the truss rod section. I get what action is. But what is relief??? My neck i perfectly straight. How do i put relief on the neck? is relief loosening the truss rod so that the neck goes concave??

Please Please Please. I have to play in my Jazz band and Hilary Clinton will be watching tomorrow. I need help!!! I cant bring my guitar to a tech. I have no time to get someone else to fix it for me. This cant be a hard thing to fix. My other guitar is at a shop getting a fernandes sustainer installed and wont be done until friday.

Lets recap:
1)Fret Buzz, what is relief, and how to get no fret buzz. Trem is at perfect height.
2)Tremolo when doing dive bombs and pull ups wont return to neutral. Is there anything to help the trem to return to neutral.

Anyone that knows how to fix the above problems, like a tech like Rich or anyone who has knowledge in the above, please!!

Re: I am so mad at my Jem!!!!

Relief: Simply put as possible, your neck should bend back just a tiny bit in the middle to avoid fret buzz. Your neck may be too straight. Try loosening the truss rod just a small amount, leave it to settle for a while, then see if has any effect. Make a mental note of how far your turn the rod. Go in small steps here, like a quarter of a turn or less.

How far out is the trem after dive or pull-up?

LOL, ok although Blue Steels suck.....loosen the truss rod about a Quarter of a turn; turn from bass side to treble

Yeah, or raise the action slightly. I presume you tried this already though, Azian?

Re: I am so mad at my Jem!!!!

Alright, I'm going to be a charitable soul and try to help you out.

First, you need to get past the emotional aspect of these problems. Being mad at your Jem is silly. Don't expect that just because it cost a lot of money it won't have the same problems a guitar 1/4 the cost will.

Second, deal with the BIG problem and that's the fret buzz. The trem not returning to pitch secondary. You don't have to use your trem but if you can't get the guitar to play decently, then you won't want to play it.

If your neck is perfectly straight, then it needs a little relief or a little backbow. The strings are vibrating too much for the amount of space between them and the fret board. Once you get the relief dialed in (a 1/4 should be enough) then see if you're still getting fret buzz and where it might be. If you want low action then you're going to get some fret buzz. The question is how much and does it really come through when you're plugged into an amp?

Where did you buy your Jem?

+1 on that...

Loosen your truss rod a hair, raise your action slightly. That should get you going.

Stretch the living crap out of your strings. Nothing will get you on your way to fixing a tuning instability issue like stretching the strings.
