Ibanez reverse headstock tuner upgrade to locking tuners question.
Hello, I'm looking to put some locking tuners on my xiphos 6 and 7. However it appears that there are a few variables involved in doing so.
There are spretzel tuners and there are
schaller tuners
.
Take a look here
http://www.warmoth.com/hardware/tune...=guitar_tuners
Since my guitars have a
reverse headstock
, I'm assuming I need the "right" ones?
Now there's no real issue with me drilling a few holes, but I'm wondering also about the spretzel tuners. It appears that the base of the tuner is a different diameter than the threaded portion near the post. This seems to require some drilling out of the headstock, 1/2 way through.
What do people tend to do here? Use the Schaller ones and drill a hole for screws as these use a bracket to hold them in place, or the spretzel ones and make the peghead hole wider? I'm also concerned because my stock Ibanez tuners have 2 nubs that fit in a hole. The spretzel ones also have this, but 1 nub. I'm wondering and concerned about having to crank down the post nut hard and damaging the finish on the headstock to create enough presure for the spretzel tuner to create a new hole with it's nub.
What is the best option here?
Thanks, Kevin

Gotoh tuners will fit better and they also come in cosmo finish. You can also try those
planet waves locking tuners
, since it seems that Ibanez has sub'd them (based on looks, IMO) to manufacture the
locking tuners
on some of the '08 models.

Agreed. Gotoh Magnum Lock tuners will drop right in.
BTW, I'm just curious why you're looking to get locking tuners? I've got 2 PGM301s w/reverse headstocks and they stay in tune fine. Please understand that I know everyone's tuning needs are different but I'm still curious.

Re: Ibanez reverse headstock tuner upgrade to locking tuners question.
Not really sure if I need locking tuners on the xiphos 6, but the 7
string xiphos
does not have a locking nut and doesn't seem to stay in tune that well. Mostly looking to pimp these thing out a bit. I don't much like the
chrome hardware
so I'm looking to blacken things up a bit.
I'm having a hard time finding those magnums in a right config for a reverse headstock.

Re: Ibanez reverse headstock tuner upgrade to locking tuners question.
schaller locking tuners
requre no extra drilling it just looks that way, no step drilling, just put the sleeve in and then insert the tuner and tighten it, it might be a larger opening than what is on your guitar
the
schaller locking
tuners are made of some of the hardest materials any of the tuners are made of, and they are more solid with better gearing. if you want tone its schaller locking tuners you can hear the difference!!
i had a couple differnt kinds over the years and the schallers really made a difference in tone...it goes from the string to the post into a solid bushing that meets with a compressed flat metal bearing type of thing and then to the tuner body..much much more solid built then most

Re: Ibanez reverse headstock tuner upgrade to locking tuners question.
hells yes the schaller will work the best i think
i use them the most, and screw the auto trim plannet waves....soo much mechanism...way less solid material to transfer tone
and the gotoh, are nearly hollow on the inside compared to the solid schaller model
