Idea for customizing OLP MM1 (ernie ball evh copy)

now i'm in a metal band and want my OLP as backup guitar the purple looks kinda *** . so i'm thinking of getting rid of the purple and having a stained natural finish.
heres my ideal look (apart from mine has 4+2 ernie ball headstock) :

the body is basswood so the grain won't look like that, but could i get close to the colour with staining? edit: it also has a film top, to look like maple.
what materials/tools will I need to pull this off.

thanks for any help ( i really need to type less in my posts)
matt.

i found some tutorials for stripping the paint at projectguitar.com so i'm ok now.

I'm gonna update this thread with pics all the time. So sorry if you guys don't enjoy it (this is my first personal modding of any guitar )

Good luck!

If your body has a maple veneer, then you can stain that, unless by "film top" you mean photo finish, the you'll have to strip that off. You might not even have to stain the basswood, some Tung oil might do the trick.

cheers

got some done today, i'm using heat to get the paint off... and its not working out all too well.
the front came off easily because it was just a film top, the back needed lots of scraping, and its burnt + cracked a little, but thats ok its just the back

My favourite way of stripping paint is to light the whole bugger on fire. Yes, it will look burned. But hey, that's way cool. Then just stain it, rub some beewax on it and off ya go... and compared to the polyurethane laquer finish, wax finished boxes ring like bells.

You could put a thin veneer on the top to get a finish like in the Kisekae pic you did. There is a section on project guitar that tells you how to do it.

You could get some of that wood stain where you also 'add' grain with an applicator thing!! :P

I usually strip a guitar the long way with a sander!!

ran into a bit of a problem heh. seems the back of the guitar is actually a layer of fibre glass above the wood. So i am re-painting the back black with enamel. have just started painting the front with varnish.
