Improving flutter?

My question is, is it possible to improve the amount of flutter in your trem?

I was at a music store a few weeks ago and played an S620 with the ZR trem, though i've been hearing that it isn't as good as an original Edge or OFR, this thing fluttered like no other trem I have handled.

Can it be that it was set up differently? What exactly can improve flutter if it is even possible?

Thanks!

Cool

Re: Improving flutter?

All I can tell you is that the ZR trem IMHO is excellent!!! does not come short of the edge or OFR in any department!

Re: Improving flutter?

Seems like the first step would be to disconnect the Zero Point system (the backstop-like thing in the back).

Well, they flutter differently, Thicker strings do a more powerful flutter, but I guess its just a matter of opinion.

Re: Improving flutter?

So what is it that helps get a better flutter? Must be the springs, surely?

Re: Improving flutter?

Springs that are broken in are key. Another important piece is the actual mass of the trem. I play 9s, and usually use 2 springs. I once read that springs have most of their tension, closer to coil bind. As they are stretched further out from there, they have less tension.

Re: Improving flutter?

DO you guys screw those 2 springs all the way in? I'd guess you'd have to, or almost all the way. I might give it a try.

Re: Improving flutter?

OK, forget that! I rounded off a screw head trying to get it all the way in. Back to 3 springs. Flutter was unaffected, by the way.

Re: Improving flutter?

You MAY have to break the spring it, too. How old are they? I've seen people actually build jigs, with a piece of board, and two screws, placed enough apart, so as to stretch the spring out between the two. I've also seen where people have taken a 1-screw board, anchored it on the edge of a table, and tied weights off to the spring. Whatever really pulls on it for a day or two.
Personally, I adhere to the DIVE-BOMB-THE-SH#T-OUT-OF-IT-TILL-THEY-BREAK-IN method. Seems like the most fun, to me.
