Is my Edge Pro melting?

Hey guys,

I just noticed last night on my RG1520 Edge Pro trem that more than just the finish seems to be coming off. Looks like my acidic sweat is also dissolving the actual metal. Could this be possible?

What are these things made of, exactly? Apparently, the saddles themselves are not stainless steel because the faux shiny metal is flaking off to reveal some dark, soft metal. Cast metal, maybe? The magnet test showed that very little of this tremolo is magnetic... the allen screws, string locks and the bar appear to be steel, the rest is not (not even the fine tuners). The Lo-Pro on my JMP100 P1 also produced the SAME results (which surprised me), but it has nowhere near the level of disentigration.

Will this thing just completely disentigrate in a few years? I have a bunch of Ibanezes, and I would hate for that to happen to them all!

This RG is 1 1/2 years old, and I've obviously played it a lot.

It is hard to see in the pic below, but the "chrome" is flaking off the low E and A string saddles revealing some dark mystery metal, and the arrows show the other areas where this dark metal is showing up (mainly on the hard edges). Looks like the saddle is pitting and actually losing material, which tells me that this might become serious and eventually ruin the tremolo. Anyone have any info/experiences with this?

This is very typical, and only the finish is coming off... Its seems to happen more to the Cosmo Black & Gold finishes, I think they are thinner or weaker compound then Black or Chrome ones.

Its only cosmetic, and does not interfere with the trems function, unless you endup with rust, which then you should clean up & lubercate.

Looks like PC to me, which is suspect in duarability anyway.

The parts are cast from pot metal, white metal, or spelter [it's all the same metal so take your pick], and is exactly the same as the Edge and Lo Pro. Your P1 is withstanding it better because it is black [a much more resilient finish]

Well, I don't mind the wear on the finish. I was just worried about the saddles and trem itself dissolving away.

In your vast experience, Rich, have you ever seen a comso trem get so bad due to acidic sweat that it was physically ruined?

Is it cosmo? or power cosmo?

I've seen saddles worn away badly but still never affected performance.

Um, it's Scotch... umkay?

It's a cosmo, Rich. That's good to know that you've never seen performance issues, at least I have hope that it won't just melt away.

yes, yes its melting. give it 2 more months and you wont even be able to see it, it'll be withered away in a tiny clump.

Re: Is my Edge Pro melting?

I had the same problem, but I fixed it by keeping my guitar in the freezer and only playing it for 10 minutes a day in the dead of winter.
