Is there an easy way to turn my shark tooth inlays into simple dots?

Like a permanent sharpie or something that I can black out most of the sharktooth and just leave a regular dot? But I feel like that would wear off pretty quick. Any ideas?

Just buy a replacement neck and then sell yours. Far easy than messing around swapping fretboards, etc.

What? I think you missed the point. I love this neck, its the third neck I've had on this particular strat, no way in hell I'm selling it. Not talking about swapping fretboards either. I just want to dark out most of the sharktooth inlay, thats it...

I think *you* missed the point when you didn't explain the situation properly. As it stands if you want to draw on your fretboard with a pen like a demented teenager on crack then be my guest. It'd also be pretty good practice for you to learn some manners when someone is giving you advice after you asked for it.

No, there is no easy way to turn sharktooth inlays into dots. The sharktooth takes up almost all the area between the frets. New neck or new fretboard are your only options.

You can color it all you want but it wont work and it will look stupid

Re: Is there an easy way to turn my shark tooth inlays into simple dots?

Agreed. The only PRACTICAL options are the new neck or fretboard.

You CAN sharpie it. It will look like ****. You CAN pay a luthier to remove the old inlay and replace it with dots. It will look like ****. You CAN vinyl over the inlay...it will look like ****.

You want dots on the fretboard with the same neck profile? Ship your neck to one of the jemsite luthiers, ask them to copy the profile, then ask for dots not sharkfins. Will be higher quality, and probably around the same damn price in the end anyway.

I dont think a luthier can remove the sharktooth and repace them with dots. There is too much wood removed to get the sharkteeth in. I asked about having it done a few years back and thats what the guy said at least. Little holes can be filled but the amount of wood removed for the sharkteeth is too much to use wood filler and get it to look decent.

Absolutely need to get a new neck.

You can fill in the shark tooth inlays but it would look horrible and affect the feel of the fretboard.

If you like the feel of the neck then I would learn to love shark tooth inlays..

Ah sorry, I didn't read your post properly. It would look seriously wrong, though, if it were possible

Just spray paint the fretboard with black undercoat, frets and all. When the paint is dry, use one of those liquid paper pens to put some white dots on the 'board. Guaranteed to black out the sharkstooths and let you keep your beloved neck, problem solved.

Rock on!
