issue with tone or input jack HELP!

i got an issue with my input jack on my custom jem,

for some reason when i put the input cable into the jack into my guitar
and leave the tone to like one i get no static, but than when i turn the tone to max i get mad static, (in standard holding position in my lap)

but when i turn my guitar upside down with the jack still in and the tone all the way up no static? and it sounds like the tone has increased drastically, but i have to play it upside down which sucks

can anyone help me iam a noob when it comes to electronics of the gutiar thanks

Re: issue with tone or input jack HELP!

you could be right with a loose wire but where i checked the wiring in the control and checked the wiring in the jack its not the jack :\ could there be loose wiring near the pickup area ?

You may not notice it visually. It may be a cold solder joint instead of a wire actually hanging loose. Resolder all the joints (if one is cold, the others probably are too).

cold soldier joint ? what does that mean that it wasn't soldered properly? yeah i looked for loose wires none i realized it was the input jack,
when i lower the tone to zero no static plays fine
when i put the tone to 10 static unless i flip it upside down :S god danm it and i just got the guitar made like a 3 months from france

Right -- it wasn't soldered properly.

Re: issue with tone or input jack HELP!

do a full shield and solder every seam.....it will help quite a bit and use shielded signal cabes between the output jack and the pots

you can play close to amonitor and you wont hear anything near what you were getting most likely

Re: issue with tone or input jack HELP!

I agree about the shielding. It isn't hard at all to shield. Just go to your local guitar store that sells screws and pickguards and whatnot, and ask for some shielding tape. You can get a bunch of it for pretty cheap. It is sticky on one side and all you do is cut to size, peel off the backing and stick it into every routed bit under your pickups. Usually you'd sheild everything including your jack cavity and your cavity for your pots and whatnot, but the pickups are the easiest to get to, there is no removing wires or re-soldering or anything. Try the pickup area bit first and see if it takes care of it pretty good. If not, then you may need to remove as much as you can from the body and shield every other cavity.

Seriously... don't be afraid to take stuff off and solder wires back together. Your axe may be worth $100,000.00 but it isn't made of eggshells. These suckers are pretty tough and as long as you aren't routing out the body or coming at the guitar with a hammer, you really aren't going to break it. If you do have to take the wires off, just make sure you draw a diagram BEFORE you remove the wires... draw it out as completely as you can... that way when you're ready to put it back together you don't sit there wondering where this one wire goes.

But you should be able to play in close proximity to monitors. If you had to play that guitar at a live gig, you just can't have static coming through like that.

Just relax. Put some fabric or padding on the painted areas before you start tinkering to keep them protected and it'll all be fine. Or you could always pay a tech to fix it...

Re: issue with tone or input jack HELP!

First off(no offense is intended here) the jack on your guitar is an OUTPUT jack and the jack on the front of your amp is an INPUT jack. CRT monitors are serious noisemakers and I doubt any amount of shielding will eliminate it and I recommend you give it away and get an LCD which will not make the noise(you should hear the racket my wireless mouse makes when I get near it with any guitar). And if you are not up for learning good soldering techniques, you should seek out a good and reliable repair shop and start developing a good relationship with them. If you make music for any major part of your life, you will depend on that person a lot.
