Jackson Tuner- Nut Won't Tighten

I was setting up my friends new Jackson Soloist today and all of the tuners were loose, so I tightened them. When I was tightening the tuner for the high E string it was starting to get tight and then all of a sudden it came loose. Now it won't tighten; I think it is stripped. I've tighten the tuners on my guitars all of the time and this has never happened to me; I'm always careful not to over tighten them. But, I guess this one might have been really sensitive. So, my question is, what needs to be replaces, the whole tuner or just the nut that I tightened??

Re: Jackson Tuner- Nut Won't Tighten

Try one of the nuts from the other tuners. If it doesn't work, replace the whole tuner.

Re: Jackson Tuner- Nut Won't Tighten

Do you mean switch the nut with nut from another tuner? Is it bad to have a loose tuner when the string is on the guitar? Does anyone else have any input? Because I need help ASAP.

Are you talking about the screw that holds the tuner to the headstock? You shouldn't need it, to be honest; the tension of the string should hold it in place and it should be snug to begin with. If tyhis is really a new guitar you could always just bring it back, or else put a drop of wood glue on the screw and screw it back in again.

Just to make it clear, this nut is the one that won't tighten. It just keeps turning loosely. What needs to be done to fix it?

Re: Jackson Tuner- Nut Won't Tighten

Like mentioned above...loosen the string, check another nut on the tuner to determine WHICH piece is stripped, either the tuner or the nut. If it's the nut...those you can get at any guitar repair shop or Radio Shack. If it's the tuner, all you can do is replace it.

Re: Jackson Tuner- Nut Won't Tighten

Maybe those nuts are kinda like a nut on the end of a barrell (Ibanez style) if so, there might be a problem getting one from a place like Radio Shack.

Re: Jackson Tuner- Nut Won't Tighten

Yeah, they are a nut on the end of a barrel; I don't think that Radio Shack sells those. So do you guys think it is the nut or the threads on the tuner that are stripped?

Re: Jackson Tuner- Nut Won't Tighten

Once again, why don't you slacken the strings, take a nut off one tuner, then try it on the stripped one? We have no clue, I'm sorry. If the other nut doesn't screw up tight, the tuner threads are stripped and you'll need to buy a new tuner. If it is only the nut that stripped, try to buy a new nut at your Jackson dealer. Good luck.

How hard is it to buy a new set of tuners and be done with it? The tuners on that Jackson are nothing special (meaning they're not sperzels or gotohs). A whole new set of tuners will cost you about 45 bucks. If you want sperzels, it'll run you about 60 for a new set.

Jimmy

P.S.: You said the jackson was new, did you friend just get it? If so, I'd take it back to the store and get a new guitar.

Re: Jackson Tuner- Nut Won't Tighten

He got the guitar a couple of weeks ago. But why would he take it back over something dumb like this? He bought that guitar center warranty thing, so a new tuner should be covered by guitar center. I wonder how long it will take them to get a new tuner though.
