Jem - Alternate Tuning - Floating Trem - Backstop - Unfloat.

Hello Everyone,
I just got myself a Jem7VWH. Unfortunately it is the only axe I own. I would love to be able to D-tune, however, as we all know with a floating trem, as soon as you drop the low E the bridge falls. I have done some reading on the Ibanez Backstop (no longer produced). It says that it will hold tuning if a string breaks. It will probably work for a high E or B string but will it hold up for a D-tune of the low E.
If so where can i get one.
I also read on a Unfloating block which totally locks the trem. This would be great if you could turn it on and off but I think it requires assembly and set up.
Finally, If anyone has any ideas/suggestions about mods to enable trem-locks or any info on the questions above,.... Please reply to this post.
Thanks alot,

xx

Our very own Kevan has been working on something that is the answer to your problem.

I fwded him the link to this thread, but he's getting a 403 error. He said to contact him directly at kevan@jemfest.com . Good luck.

The hipshot tremsetter will give you a similar affect as the backstop, and can still be purchased. Ive got one I wouldnt mind getting rid of honestly, but I still go back and forth using it, usually when Im doing gigs, and need sixty tunings and my whamnmy bar. Just not right now. *plus nine guitars is enough for most anyones tuning fetish* These concepts have been discussed thoroughly as well. Your basically going to lose the smooth action of your tremolo system and most of the flutter

Everybody's had this problem, just the downside (if there is one) of owning a floating trem.

There is a product called the D-Tuna. I'm not sure what company sells it, but EVH endorses it. Seen it in Musician's Friend a couple of times i think...

But anyhoo, I went to my local guitar shop inquiring about the D-Tuna and one of the guys said he had installed about 10 of them and could not get it to work. He said it never pulled the string all the way up to E.

Guess you will just have to unlock and retune

Tremsetter

Some people say that they get away with simply unlocking and tuning the top string down. Sure that may work but these days so many bands are using crazy tunings. It really sucks to be limited because of the floating trem.

If anyone has used a tremsetter or backstop for alternate tuning...... how well did it work????.

I was told the old Ibanez backstop did not quite do the trick...

thanks

Yeah. and plus this usually also means adjusting the trem, if you want to maintain the original angle

Drop D and such...

The D-Tuna is marketed by Peavey and requires that the bridge be blocked, ie. dive only. It comes stock on the Peavey Wolfgang. I've set a couple of them up and it works great. The guitar has to be tuned to "E" and then the unit will drop the string 1 step to "D". I haven't tried it with other tunings. I also don't think it works properly if you set the guitar up to drop D and then push it up to E. But I haven't tried that either...

Hope that helps...
