Jem fretbuzz on fretted Low Estring only??

I am slowly trying to sort out all the small little problems which come from buying a brand new Jem 7VWH!!
After adjusting the Trem angle (help from Rich's site) and also retuning to make everything is ok, from Frets 4-15 on the Low E String I have slight fret buzz and want to get rid of it cos everything else is perfect!!

My action is not very low at all, possibly about the same height as Vai's in his evo picture on the Vai.com site...(maybe half a mm lower?)

What can I do to sort this guys?? If anything where can I get a good explanation as I am not to sure I found it on rich's site....(although it is so well detail and informed that he should become an offical fountain of Knowledge Ibanez representative!!!)

Thanks Rob

Oy vey, was it really necessary to start *three* separate threads on the same topic?

All the basic setup info you need is on Rich's site as well as the the tech section of this site:

http://www.jemsite.com/tech/index.htm

If your action isn't crazy low and your truss rod is adjusted properly, the remaining big item is uneven frets. Unless you really know what you're doing, you'll want to go to a luthier for that.

Keep in mind that some amount of buzzing on the low E is normal, especially if you pick hard.

I have the same problem on one of my JS necks right now, since I just lowered the action. I haven't gotten around to fixing it yet (need to do that soon). Since it is buzzing on 4-15, you probably either don't have enough relief (bow) in the neck, or need to raise the action a little more on the low E side until you lose the buzz (to your satisfaction).

Re: Jem fretbuzz on fretted Low Estring only??

Yes, I meant a trussrod adjustment. That's more likely than the uneven fret solution because you mention it is on that whole middle fret section, not just on one or two frets. As mentioned, you will have more buzzing problems if you hit the strings hard.

I suggest you check the relief, and possibly make a (very small) truss rod adjustment if necessary. If that doesn't help, and you don't want to raise the action, you may investigate uneven frets or something that might improve things and allow you to keep the low action. If you do not feel comfortable doing it yourself, take it to somebody who can do a good setup for you. Good luck.

Re: Jem fretbuzz on fretted Low Estring only??

In my experience, if the trussrod is a bit too tight, you'll get some excessive buzzing in the 1-4 fret range. As mentioned, you'll always have some fret buzz. I would try loosening the trussrod about 1/4-1/2 turn and see if it's buzzing less.
I like my neck as straight as i can get it without too much buzz, so my necks don't have a whole lot of bow in them, but if the weather changes, sometimes I'll get buzz on the 1st 4 fret area and need to loosen it up a 1/2 turn.
