jem truss rod question?

is it cause to worry if the truss rod on a jem (777VBK) is really stiff? it creaks and squeaks whenever i make adjustments.

I've found that to be perfectly normal. It's just very snug in it's channel within the neck Wood shrinks, so over the years it's possible that the truss rod has gotten a bit stiffer, etc.

Depending on the style of truss, usually has nothing to do with the rod, it's just a nut on the end of it. Creaking means it's under alot of stress [you probably like your neck with little relief to get that much stress in it] You can remove the nut and grease it and the noise will disapear

There are creaks that you hear in the neck, along the fretboard, and those can be simple repositioning or some glue residue cracking away. The nut thread creaking really needs to be lubed away. You are really stressing out the threads, and can encourage premature stripping out. Ibanez & other brass hex nuts are big offenders, while Fender style bullets do this less often, maybe because its a steel against steel, I don't know. But that creaking also means you aren't applying smooth torque to the rod, but rather incremental jerks (that's a good band name) to the rod. It's harder to get an accurate adjustment that way. Sort of a "too far, then oops, not far enough" syndrome.

I only get that sound when it's too tight...and the neck usually too straight...
