Yep, I had started a thread trying to get other ideas, but no one wanted to play along. (except Flo) So I figured I would just do my own little "greenie meanie" thing.
I hope to have them both finished before the end of the year.

Re: LNG Finish Questin?
And, the answer -
HOK is what I used to do the Neon (Actually Fluorescence) after Japan stopped making the colors.
The story is actually we had the Deglo is the USA this was told to us by
Paul Gilbert
that was using it. The Deglos did not really need a white base coat because they were One shot style paint, When we sent the samples to Japan they told us that there was some type of Radioactive material in there that made them glow and they could not do it, How true this is I am not sure but it made for a good story, They asked Gen-Gen paints and Gen-Gen came up with the White base coat, Transparent over coat to simulate the Same finish, But really none of the Fluorescence we did where as Bright as the Deglo paints.
After the fad went they stopped making the Neon paints so I just bought from HOK to do replacement and repairs, It was good for a match but still did not glow like the Deglo.

Re: LNG Finish Question?
OK silly question for you guys, what is a "prophet machine" and how does it really work, AND when you say it gets the formula I presume we're talking about a paint ormula rather than analysing the chemical structure of the molecules involed that it'll just measure and match UV/Vis/IR reflection.absorbtion?
And can I get a copy of the MSDS for the radioactive paint.

Re: LNG Finish Questin?
There was no radioactive paint used on the JEM's. It was in the paint [Deglo] they used to get a color match from to mix in Japan.

Re: LNG Finish Questin?
Well that is definitely some good info, I'm glad he was able to clarify all of that. So if I understood him, and you, correctly, they used the Deglo to get the color match from, but then manufactured it themselves so it wouldn't be radioactive......that would mean that my paint is a dead on match then b/c thats exactly what I did. Bought the Deglo paint then had it remixed in PPG. Like he also said, HOK was not what was used on the production JEMS, but rather what he used for repairs & replacements, but it never was a good match to the Deglo (Or the production Japan color that was matched to the Deglo colors) So that reaffirms what I've always suspected, that you cannot get those colors by using or custom mixing HOK paints, you can only get close.
Pretty funny, today a lady called me trying to get me to give her the formula's I have on teh neon colors so she can supposedly have a shop in her town paint her DY 550.......she wouldn't take no for an answer so I forced to give her the incorrect formula
A prophet machine is a device, about the size of a modem, that you sit on a painted surface. When the machine is turned on you click the button "Prophet". The machine then shoots a series of lazers at the paint, silmilar to the ones on lazer pointers. Inside this prophet, on the underside (The paint side) is a series of mirrors. The reflection of the lazer some how bounces or reflects back the color the lazer is hitting back into these mirrors. Once this is done its computed, and within 10 seconds or less it will give you the formula of all the colors it will take and their quantities to make that color. You can put in different cards, like if you were a PPG dealer, Dupomt, Sikkens, etc so that the paints it says are required to make that color will cross refrence with the brand of paint your using.
Will usually look something like this...
DMX 216 - 20 grams
DMX 276 - 14.3 grams
DMX 674 - 0.7 grams
DMX 117 - 32.4 grams
DBC 500 - 236.8 grams
The DMX's will be colors in your mixing bank, and so you just grab those colors, put your paint can on a digital weighing scale and start putting the colors in like it said. The DBC 500 will be a clear base maker thats mixed in with the pigments. It has to be right on the money, even a few grams can totally change a color depending on what color your mixing and how much. Once your done you put it on a shaker to mix them all up, and then your done.
etc etc.....

I like that lame excuse...... "FORCED to give her the incorrect formula"! Nice way to treat people! What, she didn't want you painting her guitar so you'd "show her"???? You're a real "stand up" kinda guy! The kind of businessman I wouldn't trust to paint $0.02 pencils.

Re: LNG Finish Questin?
Its not in my interest to reveal the formula to the neon colors that nobody, at least that I know of, has. If they want it painted they can send it to me, but I'm not going to tell them everything they need to know so they can have someone else do it. Sorry. I told her I didn't want to give out the formulas, but when she just kept on and on I was like fine, heres you a yellow. And it was a yellow, just not DY.

Re: LNG Finish Questin?
What he got from HOK was obviously a good enough match for them to use, they probably had some matched by them. And your color match is only as good as PPG matched, and they weren't matching to the actual paint, but to the paint that was used by Hoshino to match. It's probably close but there's no such thing as a dead on match to any color unless it was a stock color from the same manufacturer.
You should have just refused on your stated reasons and hung up. Now after she spends a couple hundred to have it painted the wrong color, you're really making friends. You have no obligation to give out a formula but giving the wrong formula was no way to treat anybody.

Not in your interest.....
WOW, I forgot..... trade secrets right? Like it would have "killed" you or your business. And you forgot.... PPG has the formula. Remember, you had it analyzed!
LAME!

Re: LNG Finish Questin?
Well I told her by the time she goes out and buys all the paint and clear, then paid this Body Shop (who had never painted a guitar by the way she said) she was going to spend way more. I told her I only charge $170 to do a body in any color neon she wants.....and that she would spend at least $130 on materials, she's not going to find someone to sand it down, seal it, paint it, clear it and buff it and do a good job for only $40. I can tho b/c I buy these colors, my sealer and clear 5 gal at a time, which she won't be. Even then she still persisted for the paint code/formula, so then I felt pretty much like she had artireor motives (however you spell it) I felt like this was someone who had been put up to calling me to get this formula (possibly may have even read this thread and knew I had it) and that was the main purpose why they called me. I didn't get the feeling it was a lady who really even had a guitar in the 1st place, but like she had been put up to calling me to try and get that formula maybe for a guy in the background I heard? Possible competitor? I really dunno, but I sensed something fishy about her demeanor if you catch my drift.
Your right, I was matching the paint that Ibanez used to match, but theirs may have came out a hair different, they may have intentionally changed it just a little, so although mine may be close I can see what your saying on the only way it would for sure be exact is if I matched it to the can of paint they mixed by in Hoshino. Your right

Re: LNG Finish Questin?
Only the paint bought from Gen Gen would be a dead match. "Matches" can be very close, but they are never, ever, dead nuts perfect. Then again for a refin, close enough is close enough, especially as over time and clearcoat changing they're not the same as new anyway.
You still should have just hung up on her. I'll be rude, but I won't lie.

Re: LNG Finish Questin?
I gave her a formula for a bright yellow, I don't think I actually said the words "Here is the paint code for Desert Yellow" but rather, "Heres the formula to a yellow I use" which it is, so technically it wasn't a lie, but I didn't give her what she was looking for either.
You know, sometimes u can mix up more paint to the same formula and it won't match too, weird, even if you mixed it right on the money.

And SCS..... who's to say they won't get a hold of a guitar with original paint and have it analyzed just like you???? You must be an EXTREME right wing Republican..... with your conspiracy theory.
Might want to get some NSA or Homeland Security boys on that. Just think they're trying to STEAL YOUR FORMULA.... that should warrant using your caller ID!
Heck with you in CONTROL of the "holy grail" formula..... all guitarist should be able to sleep at night, and feel safer knowing you're someone who can be trusted.
