LNG Finish Questin?

I am putting together guitar and love the finish on the LNG JEM. Does anyone know where I can find a matching color or what color it might be also what type of paint was used on this guitar?

I had a LNG years back and really miss it now, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Tonzone777

Re: LNG Finish Questin?

I am actually wanting to paint it myself. I am putting together a Charvel Green Meanie copy and want to paint it the same color as the JEM LNG but can not seem to find the correct color anywhere.

No offense, but if you don't know how to have paint matched, then you should really let a pro do it. By the time you match the paint, have it mixed (because it is a custom color), buy the clear, not to mention all the tools, you will come out cheaper and with a better finish by leaving it to the pros.

Re: LNG Finish Questin?

I know how to paint, although this will be my first guitar. I just have nothing to match it to was hoping some might have painted one before and had some ideas for a color that was close to a match or maybe someone knew who might sell this color already matched.

Thanks

If you just need the paint codes and know what to do with them, then I would contact SCS and talk to Patrick.

SCS isnt the answer Ayrton he wants to do it himself. If he should contact anyone it would be house of colors. I think they have one very similar if recall correctly.

Re: LNG Finish Questin?

Well Patrick has said he came up with a dead match, so I figured he could help. I don't think HOC has a dead match.

Like I wrote, if you know how to paint, you know where to get paint matched.

Re: LNG Finish Questin?

Exactly, if you know how to paint then getting the paint matched and mixed shouldn't be a problem.....and u would also know what kind of paint it is they used. Contacting house of kolor isn't going to be the answer to his question, b/c their neon green is FAR from the lochness green on the JEM's. The only way to match it dead on is to have a lochness green JEM and take it to someone who is really good at mixing paint and doing custom colors and have them match it dead on.....or find someone who has already done this and get the formula. Neon colors are VERY hard to match, much harder than your avg color. They are also a tri-coat, which means they are put over a white base (Like Ibanez did it). The Neon green is actually transparent, and the white gives it is brightness. Even if you get the color dead on at the paint store if you don't put on the right amount of mils you'll get it too dark. It starts off very light, and gets darker with coats. So you have to A) Get the correct shade of white mixed up B) get the correct shade of green mixed up and C) put the proper amount of green on to acheive that color.

Re: LNG Finish Questin?

No LNG's are the same color they were originally. The clearcoat has ambered greatly since they were new, even dead mint still in the box LNG clear ambered. You're replicating an aged 20 year old guitar.

Wow, that would get tricky

Re: LNG Finish Questin?

Exactly, ambering the clear is not a problem. It only has to be ambered slightly.....very very little to give it that right shade....of course the more aged u want it to look the more you would amber it. If you want to give it the color it WAS originally when NEW you wouldn't amber the clear at all, which is what I would suggest in doing a new refinish, b/c of course the clear wasn't ambered when they were new, ambering takes time and depends on alot of variables on how it ambers, enviorment, smokey? Light (UV rays) etc....

Re: LNG Finish Questin?

You're matching the "green" to an already aged [much more amber] guitar.

Re: LNG Finish Questin?

No, actually I'm not. I got the formula years ago from someone who has some connections.

I disagree on the "Much more Amber comment" I have seen and held some LNG Jems that have haven't ambered enough to even make a difference. "Much more ambered" is an exaggeration in my opinion, their are LNG's out their that have ambered so little its not even enough to even effect the color.....or enough the human eye could even recognize.......not enough that it would matter anyways to someone I'm doing a refinish for. Their are LNG's out their in my opinion that still look the exact same color they did brand new....not many, but their are some. They were shot in poly, and poly doesn't hardly amber at all, if anything it gets lighter as it fades. Most of the discoloration comes from the base coat not the clear. The majority of the discoloration in the neon colors in my opinion if from the base fading.

I do know what your talking about tho, I have a 1990 DY yellow RG 550 that is MINT, the whole guitar is REALLY nice bright yellow, but there is a very small area on the upper horn that is starting to turn a little orangish......really strange, its just that one area, the rest of the guitar is perfect, not sure why that area is like that and the rest of the guitar is perfect. I have another 550 from 87 thats perfect and doesn't look any different than it did the day it was new, and it still looks the same as it does under the pickguard, which they generally don't amber under the pickguard. Its very easy to notice the ambering on a DY for example, but it takes alot more ambering (In my opinion) to be even remotely noticeable even by the trained eye than ur lighter colors. Amber doesn't show up very good over green like it does on DY, White, etc b/c its a darker color.....add orange to yellow and u can tell in 1 gram the color has changed, add 1 gram of vintage amber to green and theres not even a difference, not by the human eye anyways. Where many colors take 2-3 grams to notice a change, colors like green sometimes will remain the same all the way up to 17-20 grams before they begin to turn.

Re: LNG Finish Questin?

I've seen many more than a few, and they're all ambered. Try looking through the built up edge next time you have one, or any other Ibanez from the era. The range will be from mild to browning.
