Lo-Pro Arm holder removal
Ok, so I've been having problems with flutter recently, and I've traced it to a loose
trem arm holder
. That's an easy fix, but, typically, there are complications.
The guitar in question is a UV7PWH, and a previous owner had added some lock-tite to the
arm holder
, and then set it in very low in the holder cavity. I tried stabilizing the holder with a screwdriver, but partially stripped it. There's still enough to get it to bite, but I didn't want chance damaging it irrepairably until I'd explored other options.
Any thoughts? Is there a special screwdriver sort of deal that Ibanez (or a parts supplier) sells to hold down the slotted attachment at the top of the trem while you tighten or loosen the nut underneigh? Thanks,
-Drew

Re: Lo-Pro Arm holder removal
check the tech section on jemsite. you need nothing special, except the right large screwdriver and deep/well socket if you don't want to pull the trem.
then replace it with a new arm holder... glen

Re: Lo-Pro Arm holder removal
So it's just a question of finding the right screwdriver... Ah well.
Man, I've been here waaay too long to ask one of those questions that gets you a "check the tech section" response- my bad!

Loose Arm Holder
Tightening the arm holder is best done with the trem removed from the guitar. Hold the trem in your hand and use a set of channel lock pliers to tighten the holder from the bottom side. Only grab the END of the arm holder with the pliers because if you use them anywhere else on the holder you'll deform the holder and the bar will not fit in it anymore. I normally don't remove the bar retaining spring but be aware if you spin over it with the pliers you'll be ordering a new spring. Once you have the holder itself tight take a 10mm wrench and while keeping counterclockwise tension on the holder with the pliers, tighten the holder nut [if you try to tighten the nut without keeping the tension on the holder the holder will loosen again] This might be a little tricky for some who could make good use of a vise to hold the trem while tightening the nut.
Put the
trem block
in the vise
to hold.
snip
come on rich, this is some of the worst setup advice i've read.
it's amazing how people don't understand the concept of "using the right tool for the job".
with the correct screwdriver you won't slip unless you have the wrong one or using a screwdriver properly is too complicated for you.

Re: Lo-Pro Arm holder removal
Yea, right.....
Telling somebody to use a SCREWDRIVER is what I'd call the worst advice. A SCREWDRIVER is absolutely NOT the correct tool. The CORRECT tool is purpose made on a shaft that fits in the holder. Using a screwdriver is an accident/boggled top waiting to happen.

Re: Lo-Pro Arm holder removal
worring about an accident waiting to happen is ironic when your fix requires...
* unscrewing 6 trem cover screws
* 3
trem springs
removal (alot harder to do than using a screwdriver properly)
* trem removal
* a vice and pliers
* reinstallation of trem
* reinstalling 3 trem springs
* reinstalling 6 trem cover screws
nevermind that arm holder is fragile and doesn't require alot of torque nor lock-tite. This is a 15-second procedure you do occasionally... but whatever

Re: Lo-Pro Arm holder removal
Really, as in juggling a big screwdriver pointed at the FACE of your guitar while using a socket from the back is "safe"?! Were you raised by wolves?! Not only unsafe, but you are NEVER getting the warm holder *TIGHT* using a screwdriver. Period. Doesn't require allot of torque?! Right, maybe for guys like you that would only touch the whammy bar for a half dive once an hour. If you trem ABUSE, it will loosen right back up again unless it's TIGHT to begin with
[If somebody can't take out a phillips head cover screw or spring without incident, you REALLY think they should be pushing on the front of their trem with a big arsed screwdriver?!?! What BAD advise is that?!]
We've had this argument before, do a forum search, then, go argue in the mirror.

Re: Lo-Pro Arm holder removal
How dumb of you [and me] to miss, but aren't they going to be removing [and reinstalling] the same 6 cover screws to use your socket?!
Vise is definately not needed, that's for those that can't walk and chew gum.

And the reason you do it occasionally?! Because you never got it TIGHT to begin with. Do it ONCE right, and hey, it's DONE!!!

Re: Lo-Pro Arm holder removal
Yikes, sorry I asked! lol
The two slots are partially stripped - I think I'll try it with pliers, as apparently my screwdriver isn't really the ideal size for this.
Another tip I was given for dealing with the lock-tite- apparently nail polish remover works like a charm. Just thought I'd toss it out there...

Re: Lo-Pro Arm holder removal
Rich, ive read your way and used it a couple times, and i can only say... the explanation could use a couple pics...
lol, specially for us that dont always know the correct translation of tool names till we do a google image search...
the lil philips screw down there is a lil confusing too... i dont abuse the trem, so, for me it stays tight enough... tho i never really know if i did the job right...
