That's interesting that it's happening when you're doing dives as opposed to doing pull-ups. Is the guitar staying in tune? What kind of guitar is it? How's the height at the
string retaining bar?
The knife edges with relation to the trem posts allow for the trem to return to it netral point but it wouldn't have anything to do with the problem you're describing AFAIT, so it couldn't really hurt to put some chapstick like Rich does.
Whether or not you have a spring locking bar, it shouldn't have anything to do with that popping sound you're describing.
Make sure that the nut is locked down properly.
